Kenneth Murray comments about joining the Cowboys

The problem that we have is we may be relying on these players when they may not be better than what we had. That's a recipe for failure. I think you trade for a Murray when you have someone in front of him for him to beat out for a job, not when you can't afford for the trade to fail. We need both Sanborn and Murray to not only play but play well (or we need to draft someone to do it) or we've taken a step backward.

I like both moves in a vacuum, but not as much when we don't have starters ahead of them. I mean, I'd love for Sanborn and Murray to step in and be upgrades to what we had last year, but that doesn't seem too likely. Sanborn is a solid thumper who can be exposed in coverage and Murray is a physical specimen who has poor instincts. Maybe scheme can overcome those things, but essentially we have to work around those weaknesses, or hope they can fix them, because we don't have better options.

Like I said, no problem with the moves for depth and competition, they just don't have anyone who is starting material to compete against. Our best linebacker is sidelined until who knows when and we're hoping Liufau progresses. Again, we can draft to improve the positions, but if we don't take an LB in the first two rounds our chances of getting a starter-quality one are not high.
Doubt very highly we draft a LB in any of the first three rounds, just the way it rumbles.
Not when we need a OG, WR, RB, DL (not necessarily in that order) much more

Truth be told every professional sports player has a strength and weaknesses, so with that said Sanborn will be a starter, and Murray could really provide in the rotation with good coaching which we have.

Somebody needs to tell him this isn't the same Cowboys team he grew up loving.
This is a dysfunctional crumbling franchise that Micah Parsons alone is trying to save. There is no pecking order! It's Jerry as the dictator. Everyone else including coaches are considered Minions.
The unwritten rule is it's NEVER Daks fault!

Depending on how we deploy Parsons, I think it is likely that both Murray and Sanborn are viewed as starters. And no, I don't think we'll take a linebacker early, either.

Every player has strengths and weaknesses, but some are clearly stronger than others and are rewarded for it in free agency. Dallas' FA strategy means that it is always going to get players who have more weaknesses to overcome. Sometimes the players do that, but a lot of the time they prove to be exactly what they were when Dallas was able to get them for cheap. We have to hope that won't be the case, but I see no reasons to expect it not to be the case.

“I was an underachieving overpaid LB who had done nothing to remotely justify my draft status and for sure thought i would be released. The only GM stupid enough to trade for me was away on his yacht, so i had little hope but i prayed and prayed and was still totally shocked to find out the moron actually traded for me”
I didn't know you played LB...wow, always pictured you as a kicker.
Cool

Yeah could be, probably one of the reasons they are all one year contracts, cuz there is no way to fill this many holes in one off-season.
Although we all would love to see big name starters in free agency, I don't have a gigantic problem with the free agents they picked up.
The way I look at it when a team considers free agency and draft, the strategy that best fits your team goes into two camps. Not counting two teams who are already ready to compete again, one strategy for teams that are close enough to compete this year, such as Washington and Bills, that strategy is grabbing named guys that you would have to spend money on that will help you get over that hump this year. The other strategy is for teams that basically need to be in real rebuild mode, like San Fran, where you will go all for guys who have more potential for less money (obviously don't want to get yourself in cap heck if you are early in rebuild mode) usually this is mostly draft and young free agents who may want to resign with ya.

Our team is kinda in middle but maybe more rebuild at this point. Considering what I said above, "maybe" Jerry & Co is being way too careful to not go into cap heck while we could compete this year only if everything is spot on perfect. Everything would have to absolutely go right.

Kind of a conundrum we are in and believe me, while I might have defended Jerry early on in his ownership of this team, I certainly don't now. He is a cancer to this team now and would love it if he sold it to owners who would focus on real football. And opposite that thought, I was not high on Schotty at first, not at all, I do like his attitude and basically doing everything right at this point. Will still have to see what he puts on the field.

Really depends on where fans think we are when it comes to being ready to compet with the likes of Philly and KC this year or a few years down the road. Personally think we have the talent to be ready couple years away. Obviously aware it has been 30 years of saying that so take that with a bucket of salt

Honestly all this hand wringing about nothing. TBH Kendricks reminded me of all the re-treads that were brought in, he may have been the best but at times he seemed slow. Honestly this new strategy of 1st round reclamation projects at least means there is talent to unlock as opposed to hoping the player finds the fountain if youth.

Physically gifted but has no instincts whatsoever. Kind of reminds you of another ex cowboy who excelled in college by being physically gifted but never lived up to the draft status...

Run defense game is atrocious 185th / 189
Coverage is poor 119 / 189
Pass rush only thing he does well 38/189
Overall g

What was that saying about drafting "dumb" players....
What was that saying about drafting "dumb" players...

They eventually get on a team with a dumb evaluator of talent.
