just got a 5yr/33 million dollar extension with 20 million guranteed. Hamlin is going to cost us a fortune.

I think Hamlin will cost us something similar, I think that was always the assumption.

We franchised him and his ours for the entire 08 season for roughly $4M+.

After the 08 season is over, we will have a better feel on where our precious cap money must be spent. First priority is to ensure we can keep Ware, followed (if we don't get it done before 08 season begins) by re-signing TO & Newman. We'll probably also be able keep Canty & maybe MBIII but Colombo will be gone (love the guy and his nasty attitude on the field) but we've got younger guys who should be able replace but hate to see him go. As for keeping Hamlin, it will all depend on how RWilliams plays in 08 cause if he not improved we may let him go & use that money to keep Hamlin as our SS.

Other players like Tank Johnson need to be evaluated. Hmmm.

Will be interesting to see how the owners vote in Oct/Nov re uncap. Will he provide the relief we need or cause more problems then it solves.

We very well may be targeting Kenny Phillips in the Draft folks. Give Hamlin the Franchise tag for this year, or they could even revoke it if we do get Phillips.

There's a lot of money tied up in Safety between him and Roy. There's a reason Phillips was so high on that white board list.

What would the going rate be for a 1st round safety pick?

I have 2 guys a "shocker" picks, Phillips and Albert. If Wade thinks Mayo can be a Zach type player he might fit as well.

2007 NFL Draft

Michael Griffin #19 5 years, 11.5 million, 7.5 mill guarantees.

Reggie Nelson #21 5 years, 9.55 million, 7.1 mill guarantees.

Brandon Merriweather #24 5 years, 8.75 million, 6 mill guarantees.

I'd take either one and be very happy with it.

With Campo on board, any young secondary talent would be in good hands. I love what Hamlin has done for us but almost $7mil a year just isnt going to happen not with all the money we have tied up in offensive skill positions and other secondary players.

I actually wouldn't mind giving Roy and Ken one more year together and see how they do. If its a repeat of last year then sign Ken and cut Roy. I would hate to do that but we cannot justify that contract with that type of performance.

Kenny Phillips hedges those bets.

I hope that the Franchise tag was simply used to keep Hamlin for a year to, get us to the superbowl and give Watkins time to develop. I still have faith that he will be our FS

That thought has crossed my mind more than once. i'D LIKE TO GET A PICK FOR Roy though, even if it's a 5th/6th.

I too, am not giving up on Pat. But 2008 is make or break.

This is a make or break year for him. I hope he will see the field enough for us to tell though.

Good players force their hand. If you're a backup and don't force your way into a strating possition after 3-4 years, chances are you are a backup for life.

On a totally different note, I wouldn't be surprised if Killer goes to Miami and continues to be a backup long term.

Some guys are just backups/ST players. I hope Pat turns into more than that.

If we take yet another LB in the first round...I will not be a happy camper.

Brandon Albert is an O-lineman and Kenny Phillips is a FS.

What LB?
