Kevin Burnett update?

The staff must've been concerned about Burnett's knee because I'm pretty certain they signed Ayodele to play ILB next season.

I think this is more about BP rebuilding the linebacker unit. Outside of Ware, Akin, and James, we have a couple of guys with promise in Burnett and maybe Fowler (as a backup) and Thornton. After that we've got guys who likely wont be back in Shanle, Ogbogu, and possibly Singleton.

You need 7-8 good LBs for the 3-4 and we don't have many.

We need some proven players and if Burnett steps up then we are even better off, but you are right...you can't go into a season hoping that all your potential pans out. I'd rather have to many good LB's then one or two short. Not to mention injury...knocking on wood.

Beware of Jimmy Smith.

I learned my lesson with Bradie James. I watched him play weak side LB and was convinced he couldn't play a lick.

I'll give Burnett a chance to play before I declare him a bust.

I wouldn't expect much from Burnett next year. It will take him awhile to get to full speed because of his injury. I wouldn't mind signing Willie McGinnest to a 2 year deal. This would allow Burnett time to heal and put on the necessary weight to play the outside.

I'm not saying "Count on him to start next year". I'm just saying don't give up on him yet.

I'm all for LB early and later on draft day.

The day he was drafted Parcells called him a "hump" backer -- a guy who is most effective lined up over the guard -- that's on the inside.

you need 2 guys at every spot on this LB crew. at least 6 of them will get a lot of snaps.

I do remember that. But if thats true, than the Cowboys have given up on Burnett. They did not just pay Adoyele all that money to have him as a backup on the inside. I really hope the Cowboys move Burnett to the outside. He has the speed to rush the passer, he just needs to put on weight and heal.

I doubt it is about giving up on a guy -- it is more about not having a situation like last year when you have injuries that force you to play guys who aren't so good (Fowler, Shanle, Fujita to a lesser extent).

I know - having that operation in January puts him at well below 100% going into training camp 6 1/2 months later. Luckily we can PUP him and have him ready midseason if need be.

Akin signing a good start. With Dat, Fujita gone and Als shaky future it behooves us to sign another Vet LB and look at OLB in draft early Day 1 and also ILB day 2.

Holy Cow.

However, while I do think that McGinest would be nice, chances are he's going to re-unite with Crennel in Cleveland. Seems like a good fit to me. Besides, Cleveland has been making some smart moves this off-season, which makes the Browns an attractive option to any FA.

As far a Singleton is concerned, I know you've been on one of your crusades for a year or two, but he's still an adequate back-up and the money is reasonable. On the other hand, I would not be surprised to see him gone this year. As I stated when you first jumped on the Anti 'Als' soapbox, every player eventually leaves...predicting that is no sign of football insight.

Right now, Singleton is closer to the bottom of our LB depth chart than the top, so If we can land McGinest for that serious vet prescence, yeah I'd think Singleton would be gone.

Burnett? We still don't really know anything about. Personally I think it's moronic to write him off at this point...he's been here one stinkin year. James only began showing progress in his third.

(As an aside, I am not a calling anyone a moron, just stating that writing off a rookie after an injury plagued first year is moronic.--I also realize that you (Nors) did not say that).

On the flip side with Burnett, I do have some concerns in regards to where his heart is. If I had to project his development in this league, I'd say he'll end up doing very well, but he'll be doing it on different team. I just get a vibe that he's not into being a Cowboy.

Erik H - I have a similar view on Burnett. While I think he will eventually become an effective NFL linebacker, I'm not at all convinced that it will necessarily be with us though. I would like to be wrong about this, but...I just can't shake the feeling that he may well develop elsewhere and not for us.

Parcells has said several times how much he values LBs that can play inside or outside, I think his plan for Burnett is that guy who can give him snaps at all 4 spots, play nickel backer and special teams.

His injury in camp last year put him behind, and derailed that plan.

Also keep in mind that James has really only put together about half a quality season. His play dropped the second half last year, and he still runs himself out of plays way too much. I don't think it is a given that he's a lock, long term, as our ILB. The physical talent is there, but the recognition part is lacking and for all his ability he does not make many game changing type plays.

Non-playmaker but always in position is okay, non-playmaker frequently out of position isn't.
