First off, let me say that I'm not panicking and screaming "We must sign him!" I just have a question for anyone who watched him play last year. He has apparently made the past couple of Pro Bowls, but that was likely off of name/rep I'm guessing. But has he been that bad? Is he not a serviceable backup center at least at the level of a Derek Kennard? He's still big, strong, crafty and experienced. I'm sure he would have difficulty with quick NTs (Ratliff types), but he should be solid enough against big, powerful tackles. Unless he is completely shot, would he not be good to have for depth? If Gurode were to go down, we would not have to do the shuffle thing with Kosier and Holland. Backup tackle, guard and center would be Barron, Holland and Mawae. Seems like a better plan than Kosier (never played center) or Costa option.

Again, I did not watch him play last year, but is he at the point where he is not even a serviceable backup vet OL?

he's 39....

I know, and I'm sure he's lost quite a bit, but was he not even average last year (I really don't know)? I have my doubts that Kosier (never having played there) or Costa will be even average at center. It's not like center requires amazing athelticism, so one can probably play there even if he's lost a step. We're not talking WR, RB or CB.

I dont understand why it matters that he's 39 sign him for one season he takes one young guys roster spot is the only downside. Takes Costa or Brights spot? For this year i would rather have a 39 year old Kevin Mawae than Bright or Costa (i think both can be put on the practice squad without anybody wanting to sign them). I think Mawae is perfect insurance.

The question is does he still want to play? If he does he'd already be on a roster. I thought I heard he was going to be a players rep for the players union.

I thought i heard him interviewed on sirius radio and he said that only reason hes not on a roster right now is because he is the president of the players union and no GM wants to hire him for that.

I heard him on Mike & Mike about 3 weeks ago. He said that he was still interested in playing and was waiting patiently for his opportunity. I couldn't remember his name when all the oline trouble started. I think that he would be a good pick up for Dallas as insurance.

I heard a interview abouta month ago where he said the reason he is still unsigned is because he is a player rep. At 39, I'm betting there is more to it than that.

Mawae is still a very good player in the NFL, but he's not going to sign with any team as a backup anything. He's a starting center; we have no where to play him.

We didn't lose any players for the season or even a large part of the season, so no one is going to sign with us as a part timer. We are going to make do and provide more help in passing situations until Kosier returns.

.

I agree. I wouldn't think even at his advanced age that he would sign with someone right now just to be insurance.

Also, I don't think Dallas would be interested to pay a vet salary slot for insurance at one position- Center.

I saw the Dolphins signed ex-skin Randy Thomas. He may be done after his injuries, but he would have been an intriguing name for a veteran depth guy. Although he has Parcells ties.

I think any addition we may see will come via the wavier wire as teams make final cuts. I did see a write up where they talked about Mawae that said the Eagles nor Cowboys had any interest granted you can't go by much of what you see in the rumor mill

I live in the Nashville area and he started all 16 games last year and the word from the Titans is the move was financial not based on performance. By all indications he still played well last year. Maybe he would take a b/u job for a chance at a ring?

I think the guy is done and every other teams knows that too.

He made the pro bowl last year, while not saying much, it does say he was still good last year.

Infact in 08, he was an all-pro. Thats 2 years ago, not far removed at all.

I guess it would depend on the price and how they feel about Costa and Price.

Now the guy seems to have played at a pretty good level last year and we have to remember that if we signed him...IF...it would be for a backup spot, not as a starter.

However chances are they would rather take a chance on Costa or wait till Kosier is healthy. Even if they signed Kevin at the vet minimum it would still cost a deal more than someone like Costa.

From everything I have read, they are happy with Bright and Costa. We have 3 more games to watch these guys.

If they fold and don't look good over the next 2 or 3 games then maybe you look for backup, but I don't think now is the time.
