Kevin Mawae

I really love your thinking BIGDen i truly believe we need to bring in a veteran to play center in case of injury to gurode. I agree not wanting to have to move kosier mid-season just when he and doug free are starting to jell playing next to each other. The o-line is all about jelling and losing a guy like gurode means we break in a new center and left guard? i don't like that plan in season at all. This reminds me of what the pats seem to do all the time brining in a vet like a seau type player as insurance. To many fans including myself love to play GM and worry about "building" a team for the future. We all want young guy's at every postion to plug in for the next 5-7 years.
That just doesn't happen with the cap anymore. We worry about signing a rental type guy because he may cost a young guy like a costa develpomental time or even a spot on the team. We also worry that we will get laughed at by fans of other teams when we make these kinds of moves but who cares what they say? if they are too busy making fun of our team then they must have nothing to root for themselves! tell them that!...

However the thing that scares me about bringing in this particualr player in mawae is I would worry about him bringing his player rep politic baggage to the locker room and becoming a big distraction. Especially as the season winds down and there is no new CBA yet. The media will surronding this guy for quotes every day. Just my opinion here and i dont know or follow the guy all that much but it seems that every time he is on tv all he's talking about is the status of the CBA and a potential strike or player issues not actual football stuff so yeah a distraction if you ask me. but still i like your thinking and i hope we go this route for a one year vet type guy just not this guy..

I don't think he wants to be a backup. He wants to play, not sit on the bench.

That type of mindset tends to change the longer a player is sitting at home instead of a bench.

I think he'll be in demand after week one. Contract isn't guaranteed for the year.

Exactly!...Also, once roster cuts start happening there will be serviceable lineman available. I think there is zero chance we go into week 1 without making at least one line move.

lets be real here...Costa upside is limited (he is really short limbed). I would bring him in for a year. But come draft day....this team can not sneak by again without taking OL higher.

He would be an option if Koiser or Gurode were going to be out for an extend amount of time. Not now though.

I agree. BTW, we need to start calling this guy "Tyrannosaurus Costa" or "T-Costa."

Of course, I'm pulling for one of our own to step up, but guys like Donaldson, Kennard, and even Kosar helped us win those championships back in the day. A crafty vet can help here and there while physically-limited rookies can be season-ending disasters.

He'd give us a special deal because we're the Cowboys right?

It ain't happening folks.

It won't happen if all he is doing is backing Gurode. But he is a viable option if Gurode catches the same injury bug going through the rest of the OL.

I would love to have him in our locker room. Incredibly smart, savvy player. I don't see it happening though.

costa's arms are not all that short; and it does not matter as much for a center as it does for tackles.

The only if we need to concern ourselves with here is IF he would play for a vet minimum. There are 2 chances of that, slim and none.

I will tell you an NFL OL whom I do think might be looked at if cut. Justin Hartwig.

You know something we don't, or is this strictly your hunch? Thanks for any info.

This one is a hunch. Steelers drafted Pouncey, he costs a little and he fits Houck's mold.

I agree. It will be interesting to see what happens with that.

Justin Hartwig will start at center on Saturday, but rookie Maurkice Pouncey will also get reps with the first team.

Hartwig is holding on to his gig for dear life, but it's only a matter of time before Pouncey takes over.

9/8/2009: Signed a four-year, $10 million contract. The deal included a $2.1 million signing bonus. 2010: $2.08 million, 2011: $2.17 million, 2012: $2 million, 2013: Free Agent

Hartwig not conceding
What will the Steelers do with Justin Hartwig if rookie Maurkice Pouncey takes his job at center?
Hartwig's salary for 2010 is $2,080,000, and while there is no salary cap this year, that's real money that can be put toward someone's signing bonus. However, the Steelers have designs on winning another Super Bowl and they will have to weigh whether having Hartwig as a veteran reserve is more valuable to them than keeping someone else.
Hartwig, their starter the past two seasons, is not yet ready to concede to Pouncey.
"I've been playing football for a long time and I've worked my butt off and I do my job every day," Hartwig said, "and that's not going to change based on somebody pushing me for my starting spot. I'm going to continue to do what I've been doing and everything will play itself out."
There's a misconception about Hartwig possibly moving to guard if Pouncey becomes the center. Hartwig has not played guard since his rookie season with the Tennessee Titans in 2002. He did practice it for one week with the Carolina Panthers, but has not played it with the Steelers.
Could he play guard if the Steelers asked him to.
"Ummm, I'm not going to comment on hypotheticals," Hartwig said.

The Cowboys have no interest in signing unrestricted free-agent C Kevin Mawae (Titans) and will likely wait until after the first cuts in September if they sign another center
