I don't follow college football at all, but I was wondering why people aren't talking more about Kevin Smith. It doesn't seem like he really has that break away speed we're looking for to spice up the offense, he ran a 4.4 40. But looking at his college numbers he seems pretty stout.

He carried the rock 450 times last year. And has a better YPC than both Ray Rice or Darren McFadden. He also has nearly twice the rushing touchdowns that Darren McFadden had. 29 compared to 16. He also led with the most yards total with over 2500 the closest to him being 2127.

More and more I look at other players, the less and less that I have the desire for us to trade up and try and get McFadden. We could do pretty well for ourselves finally drafting some young offensive talent. Lets get that first wide receiver in the first round since Michael Irvin, and that first running back in the first round since Emmit Smith. Hell what year was the last year we drafted an offensive player in the first round?

If we get Pacman Jones, we would be well positioned to set up our offense for the future. And we still have our 2nd round draft pick... maybe we can draft a safety replacement for Roy Williams.

David LaFleur,1997, TE out of LSU, was the last offensive 1st round pick. Kevin Smith was very productive in college, and if the Cowboys wait to select a RB later, I hope its Smith.

And I still have my LaFleur jersey hanging in my closet.

Good college player. I don't think he has the foot speed or explosiveness to become a productive back in the NFL. There are two player in this draft I think are suffering form the same thing...Smith and Choice. IMO.

The original post stated that Kevin SMith doesnt have breakaway speed but then went on to say he ran 4.4. Well, 4.4 is breakaway speed in the NFL.

Dont think people realize just how fast that it is which is why when a MCFadden actually runs a 4.3 it is so news worthy

On the chat today, I specifically asked about K Smith.

Drew thought that Smith was too slow to get to the LOS/hole. I think he had Smith as a 4th round talent, if I remember correctly.

Personally I like him a lot and moreso because he can be had later in the draft. You don't need to sell the farm to get him.

When did Smith run a 4.4? ....and was it a 4.41, 4.49? What? IIRC, he ran in the 4.53 area at the combine. His 10 yard split was worse than that IIRC. I'd have some serious doubts if he improved his time a full tenth of a second from the combine to his pro day.

We don't want the rest of the NFL to know about him, He would be a Great pick in the 2nd round.

They may have been talking about his initial burst and ability to get passed the line first. Think about Emmitt. He had a great initial burst, but could be run down after he got passed the line. The only time I really remember Emmitt out running the defense was against Minny (I think) and he broke his hand in some dude's face mask. I thinking it might have been the Giants.

Point is, some players don't have the break away speed, but they have that burst into and through the line that gets them into the secondary.

Just a thought.

Now, Felix Jones has both. He's able to hit his 3rd gear as soon as the ball is snapped and runs away from people. Johnson is the same. As well as Charles.

Damn, this draft is deep in quality RBs!

I guess you can't really argue w/ his production, but I'm not really high on this kid. He's had a ton of carries during his college career and I think he tends to run a bit high. I just have this feeling that durability will be a concern in his near future.

I followed Kevin Smith all season long this year as I had him on my NCAA fantasy team. His first run of the season was 80 yd TD. I know he had at least 3 runs of over 80 yds this season and probably 3 over 50 not including the 3 - 80+ yarders.

I won't argue about the compitition, however he did very well vs NC State and Texas. I won't argue about his build but to say he doesn't have breakaway speed is just silly. He ran in the 4.4's and had some very nice long runs.

It's not silly. He ran in the 4.4's during his pro day, which makes it a suspect time to say the least. He ran in the 4.5's at the combine. His 10 yard split was not good. His vertical was not good...all things you'd like to have in a RB. He doesn't show prototypical explosiveness. Having "nice long runs" is a bit easier to do against UCF's level of competition...surely you don't think that the players in that level are of similar speed to NFL players. The best thing he has going for him is his excellent production...and it was very good and should be recognized...

IMO, he's a good college player, and will likely make a solid #2 guy in the NFL, but there are easily 10 or so guys I'd look at pretty hard before taking this one. Dunno, I'm just not sold on this one...

He has excellent game speed, never fumbles, catches the ball extremely well, is very elusive and an excellent blocker. People point out the level of competition, but they never seem to point out that Kevin Smith was the entire offense for UCF. This is a product of people not actually watching Central Florida play. Their QB was benched several times during the season for poor play and Defenses always played their Safetys in the box because of it. What Smith did, he did against eight or more in the box every time.

He would be an great 2nd back in the Dallas offense.

I honestly can't argue with too much of that. I only caught one UCF game this year...but I didn't see what you described. I saw a slow footed RB...IMO. He's got some skills, but I just don't think he's all that, and when he hits the NFL, the speed of the game is going to catch up to him. Good vision though IIRC. He reminded me of Tashard Choice a bit.

...other than that, Iv'e gone off of scouting reports and what I saw at the combine.

which is why he would be perfect for us, and he won't cost a first day pick!! :)
