they are longer by about 2-3 yards but they are done with a driver and not the pitching wedge

hows that for using a golf referance for ya :D

Not real good, since some hackers I know hit their drivers higher than they hit their wedges... they don't MEAN to, but they seem to think they have to take advantage of every inch that ol' tee offers...

Then they take a divot with their driver... :D

Hard to say right now. Folk's 52 yarder was nice but Billy Cundiff made a few from 50 in his day and but I wouldn't trust that guy to hit a 30 yarder with the game on the line. I'd like to see how Folk does under pressure before giving him the job.

Seems to me there's a fair amount of pressure involved with needing to nail a 52 yarder in order to keep your job... that was as big a kick as Folk has ever attempted, I suspect...

Bottom line to me is that Gramatica hit a big one in a REAL game under heavy pressure. This kid has to do that before I take him over automatica. Keep em both for the whole season to see.

My vote is for our future Folk-hero. What impressed me last night was his veteran-like, business-like attitude after hitting the 50 yarder. No big eyes, no jumping around, no I-can't-believe-I-just-did-that, just a determined, business-as-usual, serious look on his face, taking congratulations from his teammates as if he'd been on the team for years.

The kick last night came with 25 seconds left on the 2nd quarter clock. It also came at a time when he is in a dog fight for his job. Brad Sham reported it would have been good from 8 yards deeper. That's 60 yards.

Not good enough for you?

Last year at Arizona he hit a 48 yarder with 1 second left on the clock to win the game against BYU. I was at the game. The kick was from the left hash mark in college and it was about 10 to 12 feet above the tops of the goal post uprights. That means it probably would have been good from about 65 yards.

Folk likely will take a while to become consistent with his KOs. Most young kickers struggle with doing this well day in and day out.

However, the kid clearly has some game.

Everyone who says "keep two kickers" -- get over it. That isn't happening. Folk will win the job and I'm sure at some point of the season when Folk misses a kick, we'll have a huge thread about how we should have kept Gramatica.

What we are looking at here is either a) a young kicker who could solve our problems for years to come or b) an older guy who we'll try to replace every year. Option 'a' is so clearly the way to go.

I say trade Gram for a 6th round draft pick,

Why would a team give a 6th when they knew we'd cut him?

If you had to decide right now who would you pick?

I must admit I am pulling for Folk. It would be nice to grab a young guy and keep him for a long time. Grammy is really got some pop on the ball though.

I vote Folk.

I must admit I thought Folk was a horrible wasted pick. But I am hear to say I was worng.

Keep Folk!

Those who say we won't keep two kickers need to get over it. Here is what a smart GM will do:
Keep Grammy, that spot was Alan Ball's or Nate Jone's or some other low level scrubs spot. Put Ball or Jones or Rector or whomever on the PS. That spot was Battles or Coleman's - no one will steal them in free agency if we cut 'em. We keep Grammy until a team really needs a kicker during the season and they approach us. We trade Grammy and Thompson for a first and third <<< :) Who said that the other day???:). We get a 6th for Grammy, call up Ball or whatever PS scrub we like and go into the open market and reclaim Bartel or Coleman or any other scrub that we feel has potential. Done.

That smart GM would likely know that Jones is not PS eligible.

I used Jones merely as an example. We are keeping two kickers.

Stranger things have happened than keeping two kickers when you don't need but one...but not much stranger. I don't know who will stay and who will go but I bet they don't both make it the final cut.

Maybe because he has a good contract and there might be several teams wanting him. If a team's kicker gets hurt in preseason, it will be desperate to have a good one to replace him before the season starts.

IF Gramatica couldn't kick it to the goal line on kick offs, and if Folk couldn't make three points, then the argument for keeping two kickers would be stronger.

But that is not the case. They both have demonstrated that they can do both. If they keep it up during the next two outings, the team will keep Folk, I believe. Gramatica has trade value, but Folk probably doesn't and would never make it to the practice squad. Somebody would pick him up.
