I thought the instant I heard Cundiff was hurt that I bet Matt Bryant finds his way back here somehow. Parcells seemed to love him, for some reason.

Your cousin?

He kicks in Arena football.

My Aunt & Uncle also know Steve Hoffman, so that helps. Steve Hoffman told him to get about 3-5 yards more on his kickoffs.....the thing is that he was kicking inside the 5 on kickoffs....much better than what we have seen in Dallas for quite a while.

So, he's been working on leg strength, etc.

I talked to my Aunt today about our kickers situation today and so that's how I found out that the Chiefs are talking to him....they just need to bring him into camp, now. Whenever that happens.

Edit: It's Bruce DeHaven that they know....Steve Hoffman they have talked to though.

Can't we wait until we see how Cortez does NOW, instead of wanting to cut him for how he did three years ago?

Or should Bill Parcells have cut Adam Vinatieri as a rookie because he absolutely stunk as a placekicker during his senior year of college?

who was the kicker back when Jimmy was coach, the guy who missed 1 to 3 (?) field goals, then was fired the next day.He was crying his butt off on camera.Didn't we then bring in Eddie Murray?

You have a point, I give you that. But you can't ignore the guys history either and pretend it never happened. The guy hasn't been able to stay on a team, period. He is worse between the 40-49 than the kicker we had and he has been less reliable on shorter kicks.

The comparison to Adam V. doesn't hold water when you are comparing 1 season against Cortez and his 6 seasons.

hey id agree if Cortez wasnt so damn terrible. There's definately guys who are Ok in college and then become good at the pro level. Cortez has kicked at this level, and I haven't heard anythng from him since SF dropped him, probably for a reason. Plus he went to OSU, and I hate them(thats my bias against him).

I've seen him fail under pressure twice in 1 game. And have seen him miss alot of FG's...I live in the Bay Area, believe me, I know about how bad this guy is. Kickers is one of the few positions, IMO, where stats show alot about a guy. He can miss a couple cuz of bad snaps, bad weather (SF has wind and rain), but to hit 44% of ur 40-49yrd attempts, very weak

Cundiff also had the advantage of kicking almost all of his field-goal attempts on turf. Cortez has kicked almost all of his attempts on grass. And Cortez is at least 10 percentage points better than Cundiff on both surfaces, but because the vast majority of his kicks came on grass, his overall percentage is slightly lower.

ON GRASS, OVERALL
Cundiff 6-for-11 (54.5 percent)
Cortez 33-for-48 (68.8 percent)

ON TURF, OVERALL
Cundiff 49-for-63 (77.8 percent)
Cortez 8-for-9 (88.9 percent)

ON GRASS, 40-49 YARDS
Cundiff 1-for-5 (20 percent)
Cortez 6-for-15 (40 percent)

ON TURF, 40-49 YARDS
Cundiff 16-for-23 (69.6 percent)
Cortez 2-for-3 (66.7 percent)

A few more points to ponder --

-- In situations deemed "late and close," Cortez is 6-for-7 in his career, while Cundiff is 7-for-12.

-- Cortez has never missed an extra point. He's 81-for-81. Cundiff is 86-for-87.

-- Six of Cortez's 16 career misses, including all three of his misses from inside 26 yards, were blocked kicks, not missed kicks. Were those all his fault? I don't know, but I'd say it's unlikely.

Now, I'm not saying Cortez will be our guy, or even that I'd rather have him than Cundiff. But let's at least wait to see how Cortez does here before we cut him because of something that happened three years ago.

You have way too much time on your hands...defending Jose Cortez. have you no shame? jp man good counter argument. He's still not clutch. Cundiff has hit big kicks, with seconds on the clock, and cortez has missed em. And he's a Beaver

Okay, perhaps I should have asked who your cousin is? and where was he kicking most recently? college and such?

Is that your way of saying that you lost the arguement?

I DO NOT TRUST CORTEZ. SOMEONE ELSE POINTED THIS OUT TOO, CORTEZ MISSED A FG WITHIN 30 YARDS TO WIN IT, THE NINERS GET THE BALL BACK AND HE HAS ANOTHER CHANCE TO DO IT AND HE MISSES AGAIN. I DO NOT LIKE THIS AT ALL. HE'S WORSE THAN CUNDIFF...

Cortez is 8/18 from 40-49...44%
Cortez 41/57 overall...72%(if i round up)

Cundiff 17/28 from 40-49...60% 16% is alot of points Cortez failed to pick up
Cundiff 55/74 overall..74% 17 more kicks, 2% mroe accurate

not only this, but in his time in SF, for wahtever reasons Cortez only attempted 1 FG of 50+ yards, so they had no trust in him from range.

you guys were worried about Cundiff and his abilities...Cortez is alot worse. I've seen Cortez, sorry to take one bad outing, but miss not 1, but 2 clutch kicks in one game. Cundiff beat St. Louis with a late 50+ yarder a couple seasons back, the Giants 2 years ago with that 52 yarder on MNF, and the overtime winner. Cundiff has made some big kicks, and I dont trust him...Cortez.. well the stat line says it

Cortez is VERY average. I hope we pick someone else up. We are going to be involved in a lot of close games IMO, we don't need to be relying on this guy. I'm a little surprised more people aren't concerned about this area.
