Not happy with this defense (who the heck is?) but I'd give just about any defensive coordinator a pass due to the amount of injuries suffered by the defensive line.

The injuries on the defensive line pretty much guaranteed suckage right outta the chute.

Points per Game Allowed:
Dallas 22nd
New Orleans 5th
Houston 26th

Houston's yardage ranking appears to be a bit misleading.

I GUESS thats what happens when the D getas tagged for matt schaub throwing two pick 6's every week lol

I disagree. They preach hustle and stripping the ball. These two things in combination create your 'luck'...

Well only Kiffen knows how to teach the players how to hustle and strip the ball. Nobody else in the NFL does that. Too bad there are no more games with the Giants to pad the turnover stats.

I agree. The front four is critical in this style of defense. Ratliff and Spencer could have been critical cogs in the defense. Add in Ware missing a couple of games and it shouldn't be surprising there have been some struggles.

And add it Hatcher, who's played better than Ware (IMO) as missing time also.

The defensive line has been a complete cluster.

My biggest disappointment this year (and I would assume for many) has been the defensive line due to the injuries.

Well, we were never any good at it with Wade or Rob.

Its easy for Ryan with all that help he gets from the offense tbh, watch their defense get exposed this week vs seattle

Not necessarily. Didn't Shaub throw a pick 6 in like 5 straight games?

Are those true points allowed per game (by the defense) or is it points allowed per game by the whole team?

They only got 1 turnover against the Giants in the last game. They have created 2 or more turnovers in a game 7 times this season with one of those against the Giants in the season opener. They did that 5 times last season and 7 times in 2011. It doesn't look like pat stadding against just one team.

I thought they did a better job of creating turnovers at the end of the last season. I do think the emphasis on turnovers is greater this season but at what cost? 600 yards?

I see your point, but is one at the expense of the other? I mean, in trying for more turnovers, are we giving up more yards? Or is it more just due to scheme?

One stat that should be emphasized is that we're first in the NFC in giveaways/takeaways and 2nd overall in takeaways. That's pretty solid. Like Rob's defense last season, this one has been decimated by injury, but unlike the D last season, this one is creating turnovers.

Thanks to marinelli not kiffen

They had 3 turnovers over the last 4 games of 2012. Zero in the last two.

I remember the Steeler and Cincy games. Big game changing turnovers. They created a late fumble against the Saints but couldn’t recover it. They had opportunities and the effort was there.

It is a bunch of square pegs in round holes, but that was expected when moving to the 4-3. That does not just happen in one season. There will be an adjustment period. I'm not a fan of Roby Ryan. He is a blowhard.

No disrespect, but I don't really get this "square peg in round hole" talk. Hatcher is better as a 4-3 DT. I think Ware, if healthy, is a great player regardless of scheme. Same with Lee. Carter may be struggling, but he played OLB in a 4-3 at UNC, and that was only 3 years ago. We haven't had Spencer all year. Scheme shouldn't make a difference in the secondary. The guys we've picked up this year all fit the 4-3. I understand there's an adjustment period anytime you change schemes, but these guys all seem to fit a 4-3 IMO. What am I missing?

That seemed to be a major point of frustration. They would cause a fumble, but couldn't recover to save their lives. So, is the difference more from just having an emphasis on getting to the ball?

Pretty amazing they have recovered 12 of 12 forced fumbles this season. Maybe it’s hustle and maybe it’s some luck. I love the turnovers, just wish they didn’t give up history shattering yards in the process, lol.

Oh yeah, I hear ya. But I think it's just like any other scheme. You gotta have the players, and we just haven't.

Takeaways are the only reason this team has a winning record right now. It's not the play of the offense. It's not the stinginess of the defense. It's takeaways.

The offense showed some life against Oakland. Hopefully, it continues.
