Killer instinct: Is this what we are lacking?

The killer instinct would have been the grand finale of all the run plays potentially leading up to an endzone kill shot for a TD. Less than 5 mins to go and needing 2 td's was the right play at 4th and 1, with no other play to be considered with our D playing the way it is

I will say the analytics which this team pays attention to probably says 12 point lead is safer than 9 point lead. 9 points is a TD and FG, 12 points is 2 TDs. Also with the way the defense was playing it was the better bet. Rams were going hard at the run at the end.

We took the sure win. That FG insured victory as there was no way the Rams could score 2 TDs on us in such a short amount of time with an onside kick.
Going for it on 4th down in that situation would have given the Rams the only realistic path to victory. If they stopped us (and there had been a few tackles behind the line today), the momentum shifts. If they manage a TD, they can use their timeouts to stop us and force a punt. Then all they need is a FG to win. I think we did the smart thing and probably what analytics suggest.

When your defense is playing like that, you try to control the clock when you have the ball and avoid turnovers.

I was questioning that also, And Mac who usually goes for 4th downs will go for it , I expected and surprised by field goal. But then looked at scoreboard, it was 12 point lead . Got me thinking, going for 4thdown is a risk , even we get 1st down a TD is not guaranteed. Of course we could have taken more time off the clock.

Also 12 point lead assures it will need 2 TDs to get even. Even 1 TD and successful 2 point conversion and a Field goal will be a point short . With 5 mins left , the way our D was playing giving up 2 TDs back to back was improbable.

Hence I support the decision for FG.

This was the right call. Force them to have to score two TD's to win. We go and don't make it, then a score and a FG and we're sent home crying.

The decision to kick the FG came from the same mentality and game plan that has us at 4-0 with our backup QB. Play smart, mistake free football, and let your defense take care of the rest.

Kicking the FG and putting the Rams in the position of needing 2tds in the final 3 minutes of the game was the "spike in hand" blow.

Maher has been very reliable this year

Defense basically shut them out in the 2nd half

Our Defense has not let us down all year closing games out
I was screaming for them to kick the FG hoping they werent gonna run that play
