Blank said he spoke to the chief and vocal opponent of the deal, Dallas owner Jerry Jones, twice in the past few days, including Tuesday night. Jones had threatened to sue the owners last month because he was opposed to the tenor of the negotiations with Goodell and to extending him with a year-and-a-half left on his contract when there were so many contentious issues buffeting the league. Blank said Jones “understands the contract and how we got here,” and said Jones would be presenting some proposals on league matters important to him soon. There is a league meeting in Dallas next week. Pragmatist that he is, Jones could use that meeting to smooth over some of the rough feelings left by him going rogue in these negotiations and making some sensitive internal committee details public. In the end, it’s clear Jones still harbored resentment over the rush to extend Goodell for the next six-plus years.

The deal got done in the last six days. Each of the six members of the Compensation Committee divided up the owners. The six members spoke to the other 26 owners; Some owners had more than one conversation with their peers. Blank took Jones. One owners said he had heard Blank told Jones late last week, in effect: You’ve been an incredibly valuable owner in this league for more than 25 years. The league needs you. It’s better to help the league from within than from the outside. Jones had argued the committee wasn’t transparent enough. But Blank said each of the 26 owners not on the committee had been called at least five times over the last year to be briefed on the state of the negotiations and asked for their input.

If true, Blank cleaverly used JJ’s ego against him and smartly appealed to his vanity. In cases like these, it is often good practice to allow the loser to save face. JJ saved some face.

The Compensation Committee has Mara, Rooney, and Kraft.

I am shocked. You have the Maras and Rooneys who are in-laws (those Steelers SB runs with horrendously biased officiating starting to make a little more sense?), while all three are NE power market teams, which is coincidentally exactly where the NFL office is located.

The NFL and most of its media is based in the NE. 3 of the 6 Compensation Committee members, who just gave Roger 200$ million, are all members of the NE Rotary Club elite.

I'd be a little angry if I was Jerry too. The most valuable franchise in the league and you don't fit in with the Mean Girls, while they leverage their relationships for mutual benefit.

Sweet.

They were in a hurry to tear up his deal and write a new one
Wonder if they would feel the same about the CBA
Or wonder if the networks might want to offer a new tv contract

The upcoming CBA may in fact be part of it. One issue at a time logic. If this is the case, I hope the players give the league a dose of you know what.

He ain't in the family and they showed it by sitting his best player for 6 weeks.

Some where in the Matrix is an audio of Goodell and Blank conversing. It goes something like this:

"Arthur, I will help you with (another) new stadium if you head the Compensation Committee and push my contract approval."

By the way, which owners are on this Committee? Blank and who else? Mara and Rooney? Kraft? I see those names posted but not the full six members.

Arthur Blank, Robert Kraft, John Mara, Art Rooney II, Bob McNair and Clark Hunt.

Thank you. I forgot about McNair and the infamous quote that got blown up.
Wow, you'd think Hunt would ask for some love to stop the free fall in KC. It's like they've forgotten he was in the room... lol

I'd love to see Jerry go completely rogue ala Al Davis. I wish there was some halfway legitimate rival league that a few big name owners could secede to and become real competition for the NFL.

Goodell should have stipulated in his contract that Jerry has to call him daddy after sonning him on Zeke and his extension

yep. Well there is going to be a strike and lockout no matter what and I guess the majority of owners decided that they can let Goodell take all the blame. They are setting him up as a scapegoat. When the strike/lockout happens the olive branch the owners will offer will be Goodells head.
