Dallas Cowboys
Post-draft grade: C

This was obviously a fabulous draft, netting a franchise-changer at the quarterback position and useful players elsewhere, with only one major question mark that directly affects the ability of this team to be a Super Bowl contender in 2017. First, let's get this out of the way: We all missed on Dak Prescott and what he was capable of. It's yet another reminder that where you land matters so much. This offense is a perfect incubator for a young QB, with a great offensive line and a solid running game, but we can't say, "Anybody could do what Dak did." No way. He was better than we could have imagined, and the only question now is how good he can be. Just remember: Dallas wanted both Paxton Lynch and Connor Cook before it was essentially forced to draft Prescott. But the Cowboys still pulled the trigger and deserve the credit.

I don't want to understate how good Ezekiel Elliott is (1,631 yards, 16 TDs) and was -- I called him "one of the best running back prospects in recent years" -- but I said then I expected him to have a huge rookie year, and I'd say the same for other running backs playing here. He's a great, great player, but he needed to be in order to justify the pick slot (see: Jordan Howard). If there's a big question, it's still Jaylon Smith in Round 2. Again, this is the best player in the draft if he's healthy, but what he'll become still remains a mystery, and that's a huge bet Dallas placed knowing its defensive personnel was a problem and will be again in 2017. And they did that two years in a row in Round 2, after taking Randy Gregory the year before. Charles Tapper, Dallas' fourth-round pick, also didn't see the field because of a back injury. This affects the on-field talent level. Outside of that, Dallas got useful contributions from Maliek Collins (670 snaps) and Anthony Brown, who might have to start in a suddenly empty secondary.

Make no mistake, it was a great draft based on Dak and Zeke alone. Hopefully, Smith can get on the field and make this an easy A+.

New grade: A-

Having a 4th round QB throw for 23 TDs and only 4 interceptions should already make the draft an A+ honestly.
The guy beat Tom Bradys long standing record. Nope A- because i dont want to look that stupid. Give it up Mel. There isnt even a grade that can make this draft look better than it was

Yea, the only knock could be Smith, if he doesn't pan out. That being said, no other team better have an A if we got an A-.

Cowboys hit on a QB, RB, CB, DT. With two guys that should contribute this year.
Now, there's still some growth needed for guys mentioned above, but overall it looks like a great draft.

Relax, it is a regrade....so...
Drafting Jaylon Smith is still an issue here. So I have no problem it being an A-...dang, and A would suffice.
not if Jaylon plays and contributes even half of what we all want to to do....then, yes regrade to an A+....or as posted GOAT.

And 29 total TD's. At the end of the day, if you draft a QB who had the greatest rookie season of all time, that's an A+ by itself. Zeke, as amazing as he is, is icing on the cake.

Hell, this draft was an A+, plus extra credit.

Atlanta went from a B- to an A
Chicago went from an A- to an A

This is another example of anti-Cowboys bias in the national media. I know it exists because many of the media members are from the east coast and Dallas has to live up to a different standard than other teams to earn praise.

If you get one really good player and two solid starters in a draft that's an A draft. If you get a franchise QB (the hardest position to fill in football) and another all-pro player, that by itself should be an A. Add two starters in Collins and Brown and it should be an A+ already. Smith and Tapper panning out close to their talent levels would make this a better draft than half the teams in the league have ever had. I don't know if it's GOAT, because Dallas and Pittsburgh had some phenomenal drafts back in the 70s. Despite getting little else that year, the Ravens drafting Ray Lewis and Ogden in the same year (two HOF players) is as good a modern-day haul as you'll find.
