Nothing wrong with these three picks and the one standout to me was every time I watched UT play, the unusual name of Overshown was used a lot, the guy was all over the field. He also got to practice against a damned good stable of UT RB's.

after watching some videos i can say Schoonmaker is a really good blocker, better than all 3 of our TEs.
From all of my *ichigan friends, he is an absolute monster on 3rd downs. Great size, will make 4 very happy

Schoonmaker. I like the player, but he was way overdrafted.
It’s the way the draft goes. Jags took Brenton Strange a few picks later who was rated lower than Schoon.

The draft happens 1 of 2 ways when you draft late.

1 you either go and get players you want.

2 the draft falls into your lap like New York, Philly, Baltimore etc

I think it's easier than that. We lost Schultz and didn't replace him in FA. We lost Watkins and didn't replace him in FA. We lost Barr and didn't replace him FA. These were the positions we used our first three picks on.

All other positions, we added some kind of replacement: Elliott/Jones II, Washington-Hilton/Cooks, McGovern/Edoga, Brown/Gilmore. We didn't lose any DEs, Ss, QBs.
We didn’t replace RB and OL

Okay, so let's take the average of Kiper and McShay's scores, not to say that they are the draft Oracles, but just for an exercise.

Smith 34 drafted at 26 34-26=8 lost value points.

Schoonmaker 75 drafted at 58 75-58=17 lost value points

Overshown 92 (91.5) drafted at 90 92-90=2

So, according to Kiper and McShay, the Cowboys lost a total of 27 points. A total round in the draft is 32 points.

The Cowboys lost almost a total round in draft value according to Kiper and McShay.

It's almost as if the Cowboys drafted an equivalent of a low 2nd, another low 2nd, and mid 3rd pick instead of a low 1st, low 2nd, and low 3rd.

.......according to Kiper and McShay.

This is a fair criticism. The issue isn't so much with the selections but it seems like they could have traded back at point, picked up the same players and some additional picks.

The 2nd round pick is the one I have an issue with. That was a pure need pick and the guy they took has an injury history. But his RAS score gave the scouts a collective boner.

Smith is a starter. And I won’t be surprised to see Schoonmaker starting as well. IMO it says a lot about what they think about Ferguson that they took this TE in round 2. Overshown is a player.
How in the world is Mazi going to be better than Hankins? And outside goal line situations we can’t play two 1Ts simultaneously when neither give you any pass rush.

Agree on all accounts, the Texas LB will see the field a lot.

You don’t need sacks from the DT position, just a push to make the QB uncomfortable because MP and DL should be getting home.

I think what is going on is that the mock guys really had a few players overrated. Guys like Levis, Hooker or Mayer went waaaay after they were projected, making it so that all of the players actually drafted were taken "ahead" of where they should have been.

When you look at a position like TE, Dallas should have been able to get a guy like La Porta if you believe these guys with their second round pick . . . . except he went much earlier.

If they can all contribute, I don’t care if they were slightly overdrafted. The draft is a gamble. You can take a chance in the 2nd round on guys like Kelvin Joseph who have 1st round potential but high bust factor, or you can take a guy like Schoonmaker who might’ve been available in the 3rd round but has a high floor.

Mel Kiper, has ben wrong more than he has been right! He is not a guy that I would consider a person in the "KNOW" what this team is looking for. Besides, can't take anyone serious with that hair style!

Can't be too hard on Dallas for the TE pick, they use a two TE setup a lot, and they only have 3 on the roster. Ferguson the only one that is apparently a really good blocker, if he gets hurt you're down to Hendershot and McKeon, not a good thing.

100%

This is what makes the draft almost unbearable amongst message boards.

It’s literally … “I want XXX player!” Your team selects another guy and it’s immediately bad or a bust

My only gripe is they took Schoonmaker over Tucker Kraft. I feel Kraft is a better receiver and has a lot more upside.

With that being said, Lunda Wells is a professional coach who works directly with these players. If he prefers a guy you have to respect that over guys watching YouTube film
