4. Dallas - DeForest Buckner DE Oregon
A good combination of clear need and a really good player available. Buckner brings versatility and the ability to disrupt the pocket.

Not to mention a good Wonderlich score. Oh wait.

C'mon guys. Its a business. If Kiper sets his real picks in stone this far in advance, how's he going to maintain interest and get people to spend their money on him? He changes them several times each year; otherwise nobody would pay attention to him.

drafts around this time of year are about putting out something new. If we pick Buckner over Ramsey, Bosa, and Goff I will have kittens.

DeForest Buckner DE Oregon

STRENGTHS
DeForest plays mostly in a 2-gap system. He has the size to impact in any style of defensive front, which is a good thing. He reminds me a lot of former Kansas City Chiefs DL Tyson Jackson who was the 3rd overall selection in the 2009 draft. Deforest has a lot of potential. He has the long arms and legs you look for in a pass rusher and the size to play more than one position on the defensive line. Deforest plays hard on every snap and looks like he has a very good work ethic. When he is allowed to shoot the gap and get into the backfield, he does a solid job of disrupting plays and causing confusion. Deforest should be a solid defensive lineman for the next level and given the time with better coaching he could turn himself into a more productive defensive lineman also.

CONCERNS
Deforest has very immature defensive lineman skills right now. He struggles to get off blocks consistently and when shooting the gap, it’s too easy to push him off balance because of his footwork. He needs to build up his leg strength and balance and must improve his hand strength to shed and make tackles. His football intelligence is lacking in identifying screens to his side. Additionally, down and distance tendencies of his opponent seem to be lacking from his repertoire. When Deforest is used on stunts, his arms move faster than his feet which is a coordination issue that will cause him problems with quickness to the play at the next level. Deforest is not double teamed very much and when it happens, he is not stout and is blown off the line sometimes five yards back. In conclusion, he has the talent and size, but he has a long way to go before he can take advantage of that talent and size for the next level.

TALENT BOARD ROUND: 2
I like Deforest’s potential to improve, but in the first round I’m expecting a more complete player and Deforest is not there at this point. I’m sure with better line coaching he can become more impacting because of his work ethic, so selecting him at some point in the draft, seems like a no brainer. I can see how some teams may want to draft him earlier than I suggest, but for me personally, I would wait for him to come to me and not me come to him. Selecting him earlier than I have him rated would not happen for me but selecting him later in the draft would be very smart. Remember Michael Strahan didn’t get selected until the 2nd round but then again, Michael dominated double teams and dominated his position. Deforest does not dominate his position or require double teams to take him out of a play.

Buckner is Kiper's pet cat this year.... he will pimp him as the top rated player and climbing. By April he will be the best player on the planet, and the Titans would be foolish to pass him up.

I prefer Buckner to Bosa. I'm a Buckner fan. I think he will fit on our defense well. I really understand why our staff would be high on him.

I think he'd be a better three than Crawford. I see us moving Lawrence to LDE. I think we move Crawford to RDE.

A good combination of clear need and a really good player available. Buckner brings versatility and the ability to disrupt the pocket.

Free-agency effect: There are some decent pass-rushers in free agency, but the Cowboys don't have the cap space to win bidding wars

and lynch in the 2nd, I can live with that.

Nkemdiche isn't going to the Bills (who I think will take Spence) and he will be there in the 2nd, I will take him or Henry, take Deiondre' Hall in the 3rd, and maybe a QB or RB (if I don't grab Henry in the 2nd) in the 4th.

Ummmm.......Crawford at RE would be a nightmare. He is a natural LDE in his size (6'4", 285-290lbs.) and skill set (more power player than speed player). Lawrence is EXACTLY the opposite - more speed guy than power (although he held up quite well at LDE last year). So, he'd be the RDE - which would also be the case if they draft Bosa.

Kiper on ESPN just said he was told they wont take Goff at 4, FWIW.

This is true. Kiper had us taking Goff in his previous mocks but apparently, he was told repeatedly that we would not be taking a QB at 4. He said he didn't understand the logic there but that if that's the case, then Buckner was the logical pick. Now, I don't see it with Buckner either but if he's basing thing on what he's hearing, then maybe there is something to it. He also said that there is no way we would take a RB at 4.
