So every single large advertising campaign that anyone talks about is viral. Got it. I see you have some Apple(tm) in you after all.

I am not discounting the purpose or content of the video, but rather the idea of it being truly viral which it is not. Something is viral when it is shared among individuals such as this thread. When it is spammed everywhere that allows comments, put up on high traffic sites as featured stories, it is simply advertised and promoted.

If Coca-Cola comes out with a new drink called "Coke Purple" with a neon purple can, then proceeds to inject millions of dollars into a massive online ad campaign and a few days later, every site is talking about it, it was not viral. It was simply heavily advertised and promoted. Sites and organizations that do not have that kind of budget resort to spamming their products, services, etc. in hopes that at some point, others can be manipulated into spamming it for them.

Again, the content and purpose of the video may be sincere and legit. I am simply not a fan of spam and when Kony comments are inserted into numerous popular sites in their content's comments when it has nothing to do with the focus or purpose of the comments, it's spam.

Just to clarify, I do not consider a thread like this that stands on its own and is in the OT forum as spam. That being said, it would not be posted here had Kony not been spammed all over the net previously.

I was agreeing with you on the spam vs viral argument.

??? I said everyone talking about it. (well almost everyone) Not just someone.

btw, this Kony thing is being spread by people who don't work for Kony also. Every tweet, email, posting on CZ, etc isn't all only people working for Kony.

Why would people who work for a guy committing these terrible acts be the ones spreading the word that he's committing all these terrible acts? Of course they arn't the ones spreading it.

It would seem to support the guy's claim that the money used in the US is actually being used to further their goal of spreading the word.

My question is how much money did the video cost to produce, and how much money does it really take to spam the video all over the internet. I could spam a link all over the internet right now for free.

Where are the rest of the millions of dollars of donations that this "charity" receives going?

Dude, I was referring to Kony 2012, not the actual guy killing people.

The way you worded it made it seem like you thought people working for Kony were producing and spreading the video, haha.

Anti-Kony video campaign draws criticism in Uganda

The campaign by the advocacy group Invisible Children to make militia leader Joseph Kony a household name has received enormous attention on YouTube and other Internet sites this week.

But critics here said the video glosses over a complicated history that made it possible for Kony to rise to the notoriety he has today. They also lamented that the video does not inform viewers that Kony originally was waging war against Uganda's army, whose human rights record has been condemned as brutal by independent observers.

"There is no historical context. It's more like a fashion thing," said Timothy Kalyegira, a well-known social critic in Uganda who once published a newsletter called The Uganda Record.

It's officially viral.

It's not viral .. it was spammed. By that misguided and malformed logic, every major news story on the planet is "viral". It was spammed everywhere until the media got a hold of it which made it even more popular. Viral content is shared from person to person, not spammed by a few people to millions of people. This was nothing more than a genius move by the publishers/makers of that movie to get the people to advertise for them.

I guess the lottery winning woman still collecting food stamps will be the next so-called "viral" story sweeping the world .... quick! Spam .. er .. I mean .. spread the word!

lol. Your being a bit anal about your definition of viral. In the most simple terms, viral means it's spreading like wildfire on the Internet. This *is* spreading like wildfire. If it's on all the local TV news stations due to have fast it's spreading on the Internet. It's viral dude. The video has 56 million views since Monday. 2,729,000+ specifically went to Youtube and searched for Kony 2012.

You can argue all you want, but you can't argue with 56 million views in a week.

You must not like the premise of it or something. I've seen you argue points before, but not a subject as pointless as what viral actually means.

These events are showing once again that any large campaign, no matter what the cause, will always bring about a counter-campaign of people who have to go against the popular trend. I've never seen a single event in my lifetime that disputes this.

People find pleasure in being contrarian. Some campaigns are deserving of such criticism, others are not, but every single one experiences this phenomenon.
