Kosier Opinions

keep him and bring in some competition--

I agree I'm not looking to cut the guy but I do know this line can improve from where they are right now.

He's an above-average lineman, who will never make the Pro Bowl but will be steady for you. He's not strong at the point of attack and has problems with massive defensive linemen. He doesn't seem like the smartest OL as well. I remember that one play in the Vikings game where the defensive lineman looked like he was going to drop back and did a delay rush. Kosier totally whiffs and Romo goes down once again. He's a good player, and his contract runs out after the 2010 season.

I also remember that play. And there were times during the season he got beat by good pass rushers, and like you say he can get pushed around. He's imo just good enough to hold down the job. He's not somebody who can't be beat out. Whereas I don't know if there is anybody on the team or in the draft would could beat out Flozell or even Davis next season.

What we don't know is how he grades out with coaches. We see a couple places, maybe a game where he seems to have not played well, but what was really behind that? Was he 100% healthy (well, 90% anyway)? What did he do that was really good that we didn't see? Coaches go in and look at every play in every game and assign grades, because they know what was expected of the player and what he did. We look, and we think we know, but we only see them for a few moments here or there usually. We see them give up a sack, or make a big block on the outside when they pull, but not every play. All I mean by that is I don't know enough about what he did right and how he grades out compared to his teammates to say whether he's the place we need to upgrade. Obviously, we need to do something about that line. Not being able to make a yard on the ground when we need it, or letting Romo get killed in the NFC Championship isn't going to take us where we want to go. I know Big Len and Gurode made the pro bowl, but not sure they deserved that. We can't come back with exactly the same starting line next season. Our kicker and our O-line lost games. It's easy to point at Kosier, since Gurode and Davis went to the pro bowl, but not sure if that's an accurate ordering of problems on the line.

I agree that it's hard to assign a grade to a player when you don't have all the necessary information.I also think that there have been times that Kosier has been the best lineman in post game review (IMO).But I also think that Kosier is a round peg that is being forced into a square hole.I'm just of the opinion that they need more bulk/power at the LG position to go along with the current C/G combination of Gurode/Davis.I don't think that Kosier needs to be cut,i'd just like to see him challenged by a younger/stronger player. If Kosier wins out in TC that's fine.If he loses out in TC you keep him as a backup and discard Proctor/Holland.I guess what it boils down to is that you have to try to improve regardless of position at every oppurtunity. If they can get stronger at the point of attack while getting younger at the same time that is a win-win in my book.

I agree. I think the only players who should be worried about their OL spots are Kosier and Colombo.

Kosier isn't going to maul the guy lined up over him but he is our best at blocking people in space and pulling on the power play that we run so much.

He brings things to the table that our other guys do not.

I dont expect any rookie to take his job from day 1.

We had bigger and stronger sitting on the bench in the person of Montrae Holland. Many felt he was gonna be the guy to replace Kosier but this coaching staff is very very slow to yank what appears to be an established starter.

I don't know what to make of Holland.I don't even believe he was active for one game this past season, although I could be wrong about that.

When they first brought Holland in I thought he would push Kosier to a back-up role.I thought he was going to solidify the interior with some more bulk/power.Holland never challenged Kosier for a starting spot that I know of.I remember Holland saying something along the lines that he needed to learn the playbook when he first showed up.If he hasn't learned the playbook by now he never will and needs to go.I guess the other possibility to consider is that it was a bad trade from the get go and Holland just wasn't all that good.

Do you recall the few games he did play in? The guy was a beast and he had a nasty mean streak. Then he went down with an injury and we never heard from him again...

Kosier didnt havea great game v.s the Vikings but for the most part he's above average. I dont care much about your pro-bowl comment considering Larry Allen made it several times by everything else but performance.

Kosier's contract up in 2010? Looks like we might be getting a guard in the draft.

Anyone know about Brewster's progress? I know he was a tackle throughout college. Does anyone know if the Cowboys want to keep him there or move him to guard? Will he be ready for OTA's?

I don't remember any of those games well enough to draw any conclusions about Holland one way or the other. It does make you wonder why Holland has never seen the field since though. For some reason I want to say that Holland had trouble in pass protection but was a good run blocker.Maybe Kosier is a better overall player than Holland?Maybe Holland is just too one dimensional?

Hopefully they'll bring in someone good enough to challenge Kosier in the offseason.Maybe that challenger is already on the roster?

I'm almost positive he'll be ready for OTA's. Just like the 09' draft was linebacker heavy, I expect this year to be OL heavy.

I'd like someone in there that's younger, stronger, a better mauler, still athletic enough to pull on power and run screens, and a tad better at pass protection. I'd give Kosier a 7.5 with a nine out of ten being a pro bowler(a real one). We could do better. We could do worse. He's your run of the mill NFL starting OL. Nothing to crow about but good enough to start over many.

Kosier looked fine this season, if we need to replace anyone it's Flozell Adams or Marc Colombo.

After last year with the proctologist they probably were afraid of pulling Kosier at all. I would have tried Holland in a couple of our games when we put in Kitna to see how he did. THis staff is VERY slow to try people out in games until they are forced to by injury.

And even when the starters are injured they still won't let anybody else play..:omg:

Unless you are talking about preseason, Kitna didn't play a snap in 2009.
