People forget that he played LT all year at LSU and that switching sides, as D.Free or TSmith would tell you, takes some adjusting to the footwork. In all likelihood, Collins will beat out R. Leary in camp while spending time preparing for RT for year 3 and be paid as a RT.

2 years of this line: T.Smith Collins Fredbeard Martin Free - just unbelievable.

Free is hurt and is likely not ready until camp. If La'el takes his place at RT in OTAs he just might adjust.

Replacing Leary with Collins would be a minimal upgrade in 2015. The Cowboys have a much bigger need at backup OT or possibly starting RT depending on Free's recovery from ankle surgery. They should make the decision based on finding the best backup OT. It seems that Collins would be the best choice there unless Green or Weems do something fantastic in training camp.

Word is, Collins is basically a bigger version of Zack Martin. Same traits and characteristics in a bigger body.

I haven't heard of when Free is supposed to be fully 100 percent, but I prefer Collins at guard to do some serious road grading.

Collins will be the left guard for years to come, Gibson and Green will be battling for the future at right tackle/swing tackle, not Collins

Not true necessarily. I think they like the idea of getting Martin and Collins next to each other on the right side. Backs tend to prefer running right.

the clock is ticking on Free and everyone knows it. Getting his successor up and running should be the number one OL concern. Closely followed by making sure we have a good swing tackle.

Yeah, putting him at LG is intriguing because they are so similar. But Collins could also fit RT better than Martin could.

I do think he ends up at LG for this year. Leary damn sure isn't bad... but on this line he is the weak link for this season, and yes, Collins staying on the same side of the line is best. He also has already played LG his sophomore year at LSU.

It just makes too much sense to start him off there.

By next season, he might be warming up at RT, but I could also see the team leaving him at LG if he, like Martin, settles in and becomes a pro bowler right away.

In any event... this is a really good decision to have to make.

No matter what we think the Cowboys should do, I think its safe to say we can count on it this instead...
“He’s played both positions in college,” Dallas coach Jason Garrett said. “He has the skill set to play both positions in the NFL. We’re going to play our five best offensive linemen, and we’re going to figure out who those guys are. He’s going to have an opportunity to play both.”

To me it come down to him either competing with Leary or competing with Green/Weems. He should be able to beat out Green/Weems despite having to switch sides.
