Lack of support system for Gregory?

So the way I understand it Gregory was in drug rehab prior to the start of camp... and he bailed from rehab for a few days and thus is penalized the same as not taking a mandatory drug test...

My question is where was the support system from the team to players to help this guy out...

The whole risk/reward of drafting Gregory was that the great Cowboys support system was going to support and reform him and make him succeed here???

I can probably answer this myself... the team maybe doesn't care as much about its players as we are led to believe...

With all of the for-profit business aspects of this organization, the unveiling of the Star at Frisco etc... as long as the money is coming in
the team can afford to be shorthanded player-wise every year because the bottom line business doesn't suffer that much...

No thanks

He's a grown *** man...

Exactly, he's stupid, ignorant and needs to be punished for just wasting other men's time. Look, I would love to see him just get better as a human being. If he wants to smoke, that's fine. If he wants to smoke and then play football, current rules don't allow for it.

When you are a man you shouldn't need someone to "parent" you. I will admit it's always nice to have a mentor, but come on at what point do we not just show him the door and beat him as he walks through it as a cautionary tale for others that try the same? Ruthless? Yeah, so what of it. If he wants mercy, try church. I'm fresh out of 4th, 5th chances.

May the Lord guide him, but for me, I want to root for those that want to play and try as hard as they can to do right. For those, even if they fail I will root for them to do better the next time.

Who on the defensive side of the ball was going to hold his hand and make sure he did what he was supposed to do? Rolando? Lawrence?

I read they had somebody watching him constantly and making sure he was where he supposed to be. So much for that.

The team knew before the draft that he had a problem with marijuana. If they didn't have a plan to address that why waste a second round pick...

Seems like this team's strategy was wishing the problem would go away on its own...

Jerry and others insinuated he indeed checked himself out of rehab and apparently ditched his baby sitter.

It was implied that he has some unsavory hang out buddies from the Cowboys Break Crew.

Jerry goes above and beyond trying to help these "troubled" players. From what I've read they've all but held his hand as much as possible since he was drafted. I'm pretty sure lack of support wasn't the issue here.

Yeah this probably isnt the best answer. The players are what make the team. They most definitely care about them. You also are discounting the fact Jerry Jones would give a testicle for another championship. Honestly they probably could/should have had a better support system but the fact of the matter is Gregory is a grown man and he was expected right or wrong to handle his business.

Honestly... the best way to fix the NFL is limit upfront money and pay players based on performance...

Pay gets subtracted for off-field misconduct... if you are paid as the 10th rated at your position but grade out at 50th, you get pay subtracted, outperform your salary, you get more money... it would reduce the number of disgruntled underpaid players
and keep teams together longer as players wouldn't have to get a big second contract to make up for being underpaid on their rookie contract...

I look at it as a pie, the players that are performing get a larger piece of the pie, the players dogging it get less...

There's been nothing BUT support for Gregory. The Cowboys, to this very day, are still helping Joseph Randle. A friend of mine works in Cowboys PR. When she was sick a few years ago, Jerry gave her mother $20,000 to help with medical bills.

Gregory is just an idiot.

Maybe they don't care about the players as humans (which I don't believe is true) but they still care about their investment. They've invested time and money and draft picks on Gregory and will do everything they can to make sure he is successful. Any resources they spend trying to keep a player out of trouble does not count against the cap, and Jerry has ZERO issue spending money to get a return on his dollar.
Now at some point, they will certainly cut ties with a guy, but Gregory is not at that point.
