Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs said he panicked after he crashed his new Lamborghini along a highway early Monday morning and initially reported his car stolen after abandoning the mangled vehicle.
Briggs, speaking to reporters after practice on Tuesday, said he called a tow truck after leaving the scene and then reported his car was stolen.
"When it happened, the first thing I did was, obviously, I panicked," Briggs said. "I didn't want there to be a big scene there. And so I left the scene. When I left, I called the tow truck. I also was startled, and I called to report that my car was stolen. Within probably 10 minutes, I called back and accepted responsibility for what I did because it was ridiculous in the first place."
Illinois police found the abandoned vehicle, which had hit a light pole and a concrete bridge support, alongside the Edens Expressway on the city's North Side around 3:15 a.m.

The obvious question is to who did he report the car stolen to? The fuzz? Tisk Tisk. If you or I had done that, do you think it would be quickly forgotten?

That was something the police came to after DOING AN INVESTIGATION... something you clearly didn't do. And that's the way it's supposed to work. But you go ahead and keep thinking you're some "logical" genius because you assumed something. And you may end up being right. Not everyone who jumps to conclusions is always wrong. It's not just a safe habit to get into. You know what they say about people who assume.

it's not that hard to get rid of the evidence that you were drinking and driving, just leave and take all your beer cans w/ you

What are you to think? You can think whatever you want. You can profess whatever prediction you come to as well. But you better prepare yourself for the possibility that you are wrong.

I alwasy prepare myself that I'm wrong when not all the facts are at my disposal, just like I prepared myself that I could have been wrong about the Vick situation

Well let's see, he posted a whopping bond of $100!!! You don't get bond set at that if there's any evidence of drunk driving. Oh and the Bears aren't disciplining him. Seems to be showing that you are indeed wrong.

again, you can easily get rid of evidence that points to your drunk driving, just get as far away from the vehicle as possible, and take your beers w/ you

For someone who has a DWI, you sure have a problem with the concepts of jumping to conclusions when a court of law is involved.

they had me dead to rights, maybe that is influencing my decision here, idk

Is racing a good excuse? Have you got any details whatsoever that lead you to suspect alcohol was involved? Or was it just the fact that someone crashed an expensive car and left the scene? Because that's not enough to convict someone of drunk driving.

it's not enough, just a strong suspicion on my part where there is mitigating circumstances as to why Briggs would have wanted to get the hell out of there

If he crashed his own car and no one else was hurt, it seems that charging him with leaving the scene is a bit much. Just some cop trying to get his name in the paper I guess.

As much as it pains me to write, Sacamano is probably right.

You are leaving a hazard that may end up hurting others. My guess is it's a cop trying to do his job. Probably a cop that has had to explain the law and common sense to too many idiots.
