Your opinion of him seems a bit harsh. He's not being asked to be the work-horse like Murray, his role is just as a back up ball carrier. If his performance was truly subpar for multiple years, the team would not have just tendered him.

One year with 5 yrds per carry on 30 carries. Broke 100 yrds for season once.

Because he is a reliable back up. If the starting RB is doing his job, the back up won't net many yards for the season... so the stat you mention is to be expected. All it really points to is our starting RB has been getting the job done.
