I don't see this a really a difficult situation. If Dunbar comes back the same, he will make, the team. He plays special teams and adds another dimension to the offense. When he went down, he was the only offensive weapon the team had going and was being overused. That will no longer be the case. Zeke and Morris are locks, Jackson is not a scrub as some have said and you have him controlled for 4-5 years at little cost. His ceiling is too high to risk losing for one more year of DMC who is not really needed anyway. Jackson is not likely to make it to and stick on the PS all year so he makes the 53. Dunbar if healthy adds another dimension and can play special teams so he takes the 4th RB spot. DMC is traded or cut. No FB is needed. Teach Swaim to do it for short yardage situations and everything is set. This would allow them to keep a 6th WR and a 4th TE, just put Showers on the PS.

Perfect post...every word of it.

I'd like to see how truly healthy Dunbar is. If he's at 100% he's shown himself a unique weapon out of the backfield.

We have a million and one RBs now.

Showers will nvr clear waivers to the PS and he's not getting cut this year.

With a patellar tendon injury, it remains to be seen whether Dunbar can even come back, less have the explosiveness that he had before. Look at Victor Cruz - nearly two years after his injury, he still can't get on the field. Dunbar also has an ACL tear on top of this. If he can make it back, he's a matchup problem out of the backfield for the opposition, and he has a roster spot waiting for him.

Dump the FB, problem solved. McFadden is a UFA next year and will walk.

Besides, if Dunbar has lost a step and his explosion is gone, he's a UFA next year. No harm there.

Use a TE in blocking situations if you really need to and this becomes a no-brainer.

Someone said it earlier, the coaching staff loves the guy and what he brings to the offense. If Dunbar is healthy and able to play, he's a lock on the roster.

If Dunbar can recapture his speed and agility after the injury you HAVE to keep him. I don't think there's a more dangerous RB in the league in a 2 minute situation. Maybe I'm crazy but when we need huge chunks of yards in a short amount of time when we've got a defense on their heels, that dude is money. Every, Single. Time.

Right now i'd break down the RB competition as this. RB1 and RB2 are set. Zeke and Morris are them respectively. So we're talking about 3 guys for at most two positions. If healthy Dunbar brings something that the other two don't, a specific plan for usage even with RB1 and RB2 already defined. His snaps would likely be lower then the first three games last year, but he will have his snaps. I think he's your RB4 if you want to count it that way, your gadget player at the RB group. So DMC vs Jackson is what I feel it comes down to. My guess is if Zeke gets hurt it'll be a combo of Morris and Dunbar getting most of the snaps. To me that limits the usefulness of DMC being someone who can play three downs. Jackson, to me, is a player who can have future value vs DMC who is gone in February regardless of what he does this year. Jackson might make it to the PS, but I think its hardly guaranteed. A young player with a lot of physical ability who has shown some decent ability so far in preseason could easily get claimed to be someone else's down roster RB.

Personally, I'm not sure its an issue because there seems to be no sign of DMC coming off of NFI yet.

Showers hasn't shown anything to say he wouldn't clear waivers. He won't even be the best QB to get cut this year. I like the guy and hope he makes it. I think he could be a decent player...but he may be forced to spend another year on the practice squad.

Also no one is giving us anything in trade for McFadden. Teams put way too much value on draft picks and know if we are trying to trade him then most likely we are cutting him.

My guess is we keep McFadden if he is willing to take his role. We are always 1 play away from either Zeke or Morris going down and McFadden being back into the lineup.
Chances are Jackson will be cut and signed to the practice squad. This league is very deep with mid level RB's. Jackson hasn't shown enough to worry either.

Dunbar's roster spot appears to be in real trouble, like others have said we have backs that can do what he does and all of them can carry the load. He's going to have to light it up in the dress rehearsal game to make the team unless we decide to part with McFadden. I don't see us keeping Dunbar over McFadden who provides more in the running game. We need some depth there in the event Zeke continues to have problems with his hammy.

Dunbar looking to practice today for first time this summer according to ESPN. Looks like he is coming off the PUP list. The downside of him coming off the list is the Cowboys cannot place him on the reserve/PUP list at the start of the season. That makes the decision making at RB even more interesting the next couple of weeks.

Can anyone explain what Showers has done that would make another team claim him? Seriously. He hasn't done anything in the two preseason games, somewhat not his own fault but nonetheless nothing special. He was a UDFA that no one wanted and the only reason we signed him was as a camp body a year ago and he was able to stick because we needed an arm and he also could play other spots. He has shown some improvement but the thought another team would add him to their 53 seems pretty far fetched to me.

The same with Jackson. He has done ok, but nothing that really jumps out of the screen. Almost every other team in the league has a guy like this that they are excited about....

That might be but it might not. The Cowboys kept Dustin Vaughn because they didn't think he would clear waivers and Showers looks better than Vaughn did.
