CABLE WILL SUCCEED KIFFIN

We suppose it’s fitting that Lane Kiffin, who was generally unknown when he was hired in early 2007 to coach the Raiders, will be replaced by another guy who is generally unknown.
Offensive line coach Tom Cable will take over the reins, according to Adam Schefter of NFLN.
Cable, 43, previously served as offensive line coach in Atlanta, and was the head coach at Idaho from 2000 through 2003. Cable also served as offensive coordinator at UCLA in 2004 and 2005.
It had been believed in some circles that the internal candidates would be James Lofton, Paul Hackett, and Rob Ryan. In the end, only Hackett was interviewed for the job.

IT’S OFFICIAL: KIFFIN IS OUT
Posted by Mike Florio on September 30, 2008, 2:19 p.m.
After months of speculation, the Oakland Raiders finally have fired coach Lane Kiffin.
Here’s the text of the release: “Lane Kiffin has been released as head coach of The Oakland Raiders for cause. The Raiders will address the media at 2 p.m. this afternoon (Tuesday) at the team’s permanent facility in Alameda.”
The phrase “for cause” is a legal buzz word for, “And we ain’t payin’ him any more money.”
It has been apparent for a while now that the Raiders and Kiffin have been engaged in a game of buyout roulette, with the team trying to conjure evidence to support stiffing him and Kiffin trying to get himself fired in a manner that would nevertheless entitle him to get paid.
Though it’s likely that general counsel Jeff Birren has a laundry list of actual and/or perceived grounds to support the termination “for cause,” the Raiders likely won’t have as easy of a time with Kiffin’s coming grievance as they did with the claim made by former front office employee Mike Lombardi, who sought a contract buyout even though he . . . had . . . no . . . contract.
