Does anyone have a preferred brand of laptops?

I'm looking for something to take on the road with me to surf the net and play games. A 15.4" screen would be ideal and I'd like to spend $1,500 or less. In my preliminary research the Asus computers look like they are very solid but a bit on the high side. The Dell 1521 also looks like a pretty good deal.

I have really enjoyed my Dell laptop.

I order pc's and laptops everyday and buy nothing but Dell's.

Well then If they're so great, why do you have to keep replacing them, Huh? Can't slip a fast one past me!

My home laptop is Dell and my work laptop is HP. I like both. My home laptop is slightly bigger, runs slower, cuz I went cheap on memory. Now it's dragging like crazy, cuz I've got so many apps on it.

My HP is ok, too. I like it because it's so light. And because it's newer and has more memory it works alot faster than my home laptop. No problems with either of them.

Toshibas look nice, but their battery life is garbage. I had a Toshiba work laptop and the battery lasted an hour max.

A friend has one and she seems satisfied with it, but she does complain that the battery life isn't exactly optimum.

I like Sony Vaio laptops. I've been using the same one for over four years now without a hitch. It's hard for me to do video editing on it, but that has more to do with it having an older/slower speed hard drive (5400 rpm - I really need a 7200), it's four years old, and my editing software is a resource hog.

We used to exclusively order Dell, but now we won't go near them after about 90% failure...

I order all for the PC's for my company and I order either Sony or IBM Lenovo for notebooks. We've had a lot of success with those brands...

MPC makes a nice laptop as well although a bit more expensive...

The wife has a lower end Dell and she never complains about it. I really don't use laptops so I can only base my exp on that one. For a lower end one it is nice enough.

Concerning HP...if their laptops are anywhere near their desktops I would not buy one.

Go to www.fatwallet.com, and look at the "Hot Deals" forum, and the "Deal Discussion" forum and query laptop. They normally know where the best deals are,and you can get something you want for a lot less than what you are willing to spend. Take the difference and donate it to the Zone!

Just out of curiousity what model of dells were you ordering? I order latitude laptops and optiplex desktops and rarely have problems other than the normal hard drive crashes.

That's what we ordered. I only order business class PC's and I have ordered probably 35 Optiplex of which over 25 had to have the HD replaced. Four dead out of the box and 15 - 20 motherboard failures. Dell is too embarrassed to even call on us anymore.

We fared a bit better on the Latitudes although they aren't as reliable as Sony. MPC or IBM; at least for us.

I realize others have great success with Dell and HP. I don't know if it's sunspots or what around here, but they have been a nightmare for us in IT...

As we speak I am setting up at Lenovo desktop to replace an Optiplex. I have four additional dead Dell's in here that I am stripping parts off of before I throw them in the dumpster...

I DO use Dell servers, but they are built by IBM so they are pretty reliable...

One thing I did forget, Sony is currently running a program where if you send them a working competitor's notebook they will rebate you $200. If you send in a working Sony notebook they will rebate you $400.

My loaded out Sony notebook was $999 BEFORE the rebate, so you can save considerable coin...

Maybe the personal Dells are better than the business class? Or is it that the business class Dells use something different so they're harder to sustain in corporation. I haven't had any problem with it or my Dell desktop at home.

OTOH, my job replaced all the Dell laptops with the NC6200 and the NC4220 HP laptops.

Wow that's wild. I have had the exact opposite experience.

There isn't much difference between personal and business class other than the warranty. The personal warranties are crap. If you have a problem and call tech support you might get someone who speaks decent English. The business class support is supposed to be all USA.
