Dell D620. Intel Core 2 Duo with wireless. 1.66 gig with 2.00 gigs of memory. No comparison.

HP's are good but they run warm so at times you need to prop up the bottom for any kind of ventillation and their hard drives are volitile in some cases.

Toshiba's are pigs. They were king of the hill back in the 486sx days. Batteries suck due to power consumption ratio that was engineered by a gov't official, I'm sure. However, the Dell computers use a Toshiba hard drive MK8034GSX which has been known to be very stable.........Unlike GATEWAY!!!!!! Worst PC of any kind ever to be made and 90% of it's guts are................HP!!!

Dude.........buy a Dell, man.

After having to do support on gateways back in the day I can honestly don't buy one.....ever.

I buy D620's for work and haven't a problem with any of them.

Thanks for all the replies.

I was on the road right after i posted this so I wasn't able to look at anything yet. I'll check into several of the laptops mentioned over the weekend.

What? Can you list all the "guts" of the Gateway laptop that are HP? I mean... it has a chasis (HP doesn't make those), a screen (HP doesn't make those), a hard drive (HP doesn't make those), a processor (HP doesn't make those), memory (HP doesn't make those), a system board (HP doesn't make those), a fan (HP doesn't make those)... what, exactly is made by HP?

Oh, and I agree... Gateway sucks.

Does anyone have a preferred brand of laptops?

I'm looking for something to take on the road with me to surf the net and play games. A 15.4" screen would be ideal and I'd like to spend $1,500 or less. In my preliminary research the Asus computers look like they are very solid but a bit on the high side. The Dell 1521 also looks like a pretty good deal.

I just got a new HP one from Office Max. It was a bundle that came with a all in one printer/copier/scanner, and a pretty nice laptop backpack. It was $850 for the bundle, but I'm not sure it's still on sale. It has a 15.4" widescreen with built in mic/camera, 2GB Ram, and 160GB HD with an 8X DVD +/-RW with dual layer support.

I wasn't villifying the laptop. Home PC. 1997. My hard drive was an HP. Manufactured in Oregon. Couldn't upgrade my hard drive cause the I/O bus(HP) wouldn't allow any major disc space alottment. My monitor was an HP. Keyboard, HP. System board, only noticed a few HP components. I'm guessing whatever they could slap a sticker or barcode on......HP.
"HP invent" ................ I shudder at the mere mention of the phrase.

So, you are comparing a 1997 HP computer to a 2007 Dell laptop... I see.

No. Merely expressing my experience with a Gateway. After I put my 2 cents in for the laptop question. ;)
