Last Time Cowboys had a Rookie QB and RB starting

The year was 1969.

Craig Morton was hurt who was taking over for Merideth after his retirement and Roger Staubach started .

Calvin Hill was our 1st rd draft pick who started at RB after Don Perkins retired.

Calvin is hilarious with an in - hand mike in a crowd...

Did they win ?

I guess so !

Only reason I know is they said the last rookie Qb to win a game for Dallas in the opener was Staubach on the radio the other day.

Calvin was the first Ivy League player drafted in the 1st rd in NFL history. He went on to be NFL Rookie of the year and All Pro honors.

Morton started the rest of year in his first season starting.

Cowboys went 11-2-1

Wow did not know that one.

Don't get discouraged by that. Just because it flopped then doesn't mean it can't work now.

The won on big plays by Lance "Look, no pants" Rentzel. Nobody in the NFL knew much anout Calvin Hill and the fact he had a great arm.

LOL, the Cowboys won because both rookies threw a TD pass to Rentzel, Staubach for 75 yards in the 1st quarter, Hill a 53 yarder.

Hill ran 18 times for 70 yards. Staubach completed only 7 of 15 passes but they totaled 220 yards. Thats over 30 yards a completion. He also ran 4 times for 22 yards and a TD.

Keep in mind the Cardinals only scored 3 points. They only ran for 53 yards their Pro Bowl RB johnny Roland got 19 yards on 10 carries.

The victory was a combination of defense and some rather unorthodox big plays from their rookies.

Historic... Part of me was tempted to spend $1k to fly to Dallas to see the game in person

Pretty cool, but wait a minute. Aikman started as a rookie QB and we didn't have Emmit Smith yet and Herschel Walker got traded away. Which scrub started at running back before we got Emmit and after Walker was gone? Was it a rookie?

Herschel was traded during the season. He would have been the starter opening day. After he was gone Paul Palmer was our leading rusher, not sure if he was a rookie though - I don't think so.

Yep... though for that particular game my grandfather could have probably rushed for more yards. Just in general, that was one embarrassingly bad game for our 'Boys. Some perspective if Dak/Zeke struggle a bit.
