That was my first year attending a Cowboy game . I was at the Thanksgiving game where we tied 49ers 24-24. The last tie in Cowboys history. I still have my ticket stub. $5 at the Cotton Bowl.

Thats awsome. It was the first football game I ever watched on TV. I didnt even know how the game was played, had just arrived in America. In Scotland our football was your soccer.

Roger and Calvin not bad at all !!!
That was really when the Franchise took the next step.

Calvin Hill was a great RB and Morton played well.

They went to the SB in '71 with Morton and won it with Staubach in '72.

As fans..there was no better feeling after having lost to GB in '66 and '67.

We all felt we should have been in the first 2 SBs and had the legendary place GB had assumed.

we were in the playoffs for 20 straight seasons after that.

Good memories.

The won on big plays by Lance "Look, no pants" Rentzel. Nobody in the NFL knew much anout Calvin Hill and the fact he had a great arm.

LOL, the Cowboys won because both rookies threw a TD pass to Rentzel, Staubach for 75 yards in the 1st quarter, Hill a 53 yarder.

Hill ran 18 times for 70 yards. Staubach completed only 7 of 15 passes but they totaled 220 yards. Thats over 30 yards a completion. He also ran 4 times for 22 yards and a TD.

Keep in mind the Cardinals only scored 3 points. They only ran for 53 yards their Pro Bowl RB johnny Roland got 19 yards on 10 carries.

The victory was a combination of defense and some rather unorthodox big plays from their rookies.
Yep. That was a solid championship contender with Doomsday Defense in place and the solid OL and WR that had been there for NFL Championshiop games and the upcoming Super Bowls. All they needed was a new QB and RB basically .

Interestingly Calvin hurt his toe and missed a couple of games late in season . Dallas used their 1st rd pick in 1970 for another RB, Duane Thomas as Calvin struggled with injuries the next 2 seasons and of course Roger didn't take over until 1971. Duane was released in 1972 and Calvin that year became the Cowboys 1st 1,000 yard rusher making All Pro 3 more seasons before he went to Washington.

Actually that was the 1970 season we were in our first Super Bowl in January 1971.

We had 20 consecutive winning seasons from 1966- 1985 but not 20 consecutive playoff seasons . We missed playoffs twice during that stretch . 74 and 84 if my memory is correct.

Mike Clark missed a field goal as time expired on a cold rainy evening to ensure the tie . Of course the following year in 1970 the OT rule took effect and the Cowboys haven't had a tie since.

I guess the point is that good rookies can change everything.

Yep... though for that particular game my grandfather could have probably rushed for more yards. Just in general, that was one embarrassingly bad game for our 'Boys. Some perspective if Dak/Zeke struggle a bit.

Yeah, but that team was pretty bad overall. If we dropped our current OL on that team they might have won the game against the Saints.

Another what could have been. I believe he had HOF talent, if Thomas had kept his head on straight he would have been an all timer. He was Jim Brown with moves.

Herschel was traded during the season. He would have been the starter opening day. After he was gone Paul Palmer was our leading rusher, not sure if he was a rookie though - I don't think so.

I think Palmer had played for several years at KC before coming to Dallas.
Later that season, the Moose took over RB duties I believe. Then Moose became the FB when Emmitt was drafted.

Pretty cool, but wait a minute. Aikman started as a rookie QB and we didn't have Emmit Smith yet and Herschel Walker got traded away. Which scrub started at running back before we got Emmit and after Walker was gone? Was it a rookie?

No - a year apart.
