Last year to look like bandits in the Bills/Cowboys trade of 2 years ago

The Cowboys traded their 1st for that year's 2nd, 5th and the next year's 1st, so essentially, the Cowboys traded:

Steven Jackson
or
Kevin Jones
or
any running back you felt was deserving of the 22nd pick

for

Julius Jones
Marcus Spears
Sean Ryan

I'd be lying if I didn't admit that Jones and Spears have been a slight bit disappointing. Both seem to have injury problems. Canty has been a bigger surprise on the line than Spears, and Ratliffe is now showing more in his sophomore season than Spears has. Barber is also quickly encroaching on Jones' minutes.

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict Sean Ryan is a bust. ;)

I hope this is the year that Jones and Spears shed their cocoons and spread their wings. I still cherish those freshman year memories of JuJo and know he can do it again. I have high hopes for Spears as well. At least Spears has one more year before grading out in Landry/Parcell's three year test.

The best part is that none of the other running backs have stood out yet although I'm starting to believe the preseason hype that with Martz gone and Faulk out, Steven Jackson is about ready to have a HUGE year. Would love a bruiser like that in Big D. Show 'em that you were worth the pick Julius. :)

The verdict is still out somewhat on Steven Jackson, but I think our Jones (when not injured) is better than Kevin Jones. With that said, as a Hokie fan I would have loved to see Kevin Jones playing for the Cowboys.

This will be the year to see who got the best of it. Steven Jackson is poised to have a HUGE year.....

Although, we do get another year to evaluate Spears.

I remember watching Stephen Jackson in college and after tearing apart some team the reporter asked him "If you do indeed go pro at the end of this year where do you think you would wanna play?"

his answer.....

"Dallas, Big D for sure!"

another quote......

"No matter what i'll end up in Dallas"

i hope he just comes knocking in two or three more years cuz he is super good.

Jackson is a stud...JuJo rookie year was a fluke... he played late in the year on fresh legs and made everyone look like they had played a full season!

but 30 carries v. the Ravens then again on Turkey day I wont take that away that was impressive!

This year will determine alot, I suppose. We're never going to get much statistically out of Spears, but if he plays well, we'll notice. Jackson has flashed almost no superstar potential, while Julius has, and their numbers are pretty similar - not one of the three backs taken can stay on the field. Julius just might be poised to break out, too.

Interesting idea for a thread.

Not sure that any of the RBs who might have been picked at 22 have distinguished themselves as being obviously better than Julius Jones. Some have been healthier, of course. But have any of them had more 150+ yard games than Julius Jones?

I still kinda feel like they should have drafted Jackson. He was a good fit here.

This trade also ended up delivering us Drew Bledsoe, the best quarterback in Dallas history since Troy Aikman...

I laugh everytime someone says Spears is a bust... the guy is going to be a staple at defensive end for years. He is injured for a couple weeks (if not less) during training camp, and now he is no more.

I think people expected him to come out and get 10 sacks or something. This injury isn't going to set him back nearly as much as it did last year. He has already spent over a year playing ,and more than half a year starting...

Given that he split time the entire year, he was pretty damn impressive.

As for Sean Ryan... did you really expect him to be a factor? We have Jason Witten, had Dan Campbell, and now how Anthony Fasano and Hannam all above this guy...

I mean lets be realistic.

As for Julius Jones... his 1812 yards rushing in his first two years beats steven jackson 1719 yards rushing, and kevin jones' 1797 yards rushing...

he also ties for the most touchdowns among the three with Steven jackson both having 12. Steven Jackson was also used in goalline situations with the rams...

He has more yards receiving than Kevin Jones, but less than Steven jackson.

And has come off injuries both years...

Julius Jones himself is just as good as the other running backs, but when you add what we got in addition to him, its no contest...

I think this is the year we find out about all the RB's from that year. Greg Jones is supposed to break out this year, K Jones at last seems to have a good coach in Det, JJ is healthy and hopefully runs his way, and Jackson supposedly is supposed to be the key to the Rams attack. I think that in the end it will be seen that none of them are really superior to any other- all very good backs. More then that- only JJ has had multiple big games.

I can't believe a player who started 10 games as a rookie is thought of as a disappointment by so many. You do realize that the defensive rookie of the year only started 10 games last year?

Kevin Jones has been injured more than Jones so is he a bust and injury prone?

I'd still take what we got.

Ware and Spears > only Jackson or Jones

It was no secret that I was a big Jackson fan, although I did predict we would take Julius...

In the end I think we could end up with the better end of the deal. I believe I read a couple of days ago that Jackson is having some knee issues in camp, which is usually a sign of a short career for a RB...

The draft is always a crap shoot no matter who you draft. Even first over all picks. (ala Tim Couch, Courtney Brown, Ki-Jana Carter, Dan Wilkinson, or Jeff George) You are *almost* always better off trading a 1st round pick for a another 1st, 2nd, and 5th round picks. The only time that isn't true is if you are getting a phenom type player with the first overall pick. (Reggie Bush, Michael Vick, Bo Jackson, Orlando Pace and even then you still have the injury risk)

As a side note, while I like Mario Williams. Houston was stupid not to take Bush first overall. While I don't think he is going to be "The Next Marshall Faulk" per se, but I think they could have pulled off something close to the notorious Herschel Walker trade with him. He could have really help them compete.

As for Canty being a surprise, I don't think so. He was thought to be a high first round pick before the knee injury and the bar brawl where he got hit in the eye with a beer bottle.

I am setting the bar low on JJ.

I am hoping that he gets us 1000 yards and 6 TDs this season. And I am hoping that he starts 14 games for us this year.

That's where my expectations lie for him.

If I were JJ I would invest in hiring a voodoo priestess, gather every 4 Leaf Clover he could find, and have a rabbits foot sewn into his jersey. ANYTHING to change his luck.

Definetly.

Parcells has the three year rule. And JJ has had injuries the first two years. We'll see if he can avoid the trifecta.

Its a good thing we have Barber. I have a feeling we are going to need him to start a few games this year, given JJ's history.
