Laufenberg: Why Cowboys should draft a QB early and not worry if they've 'reached'

First of all, that is complete speculation. There's no way to know whether Rodgers would have been a bust on any other team.

Secondly, isn't that EXACTLY what we would be trying to do if we take a quarterback early?
But the argument is do you do that over taking a player who this team needs on defense? Jack, Ramsey, Hargreaves, Bosa, Buckner? If Dallas is going to take a QB i think its going to be Wentz, but trade down and do that dont reach half a round for him.

Ideally, that would be great. But what if you trade down to the middle of the first round and some other team takes Wentz before that? Laufenberg's point is that *IF* the team is sold on a certain player (such as Wentz) being the guy who can develop into Romo's replacement in a few years, we can *guarantee* that we get him now even if we have to reach to do it. Then we don't have to settle for a guy in a later round or go into next year's draft (or even the year after that) hoping that we're in a position to draft a guy who can do it.

Virtually all QB's are over drafted. But you can't win without one so you have to do what it takes to get one. If that means taking one a few picks higher than some say he is ranked then what's the alternative?

I agree with everything all the scenarios on QBs of the future. But what im asking is do you think its worth it to draft a guy that high who will be sitting on your bench for 2-3 yrs and never know if he's going to be the guy until Romo retires. People bring up rodgers but those are two totally different scenarios. Yes Rodgers was a RD1 guy, but he was the 24th guy taken big difference. IMO its not worth it, and while it does sting to pass on a "potential Qb of the future" nobody would know until Romo's time is done. What if Romo retires in 3 yrs and Wentz comes in and stinks it up? Lets not overdue the SR bowl. The top talent in the drafts are always the underclassmen. There are some decent prospects but its basically players who are 3RD guys down and tickle in a few players looking to get into RD2 and RD1. Wentz is a a 15 pick and later guy ast the very best. Lynch is the better prospect IMO. Only reason Wentz is being mentioned is because Cowboys are coaching him. But noway is Wentz even close to being a top 4 pick.

If Wentz played for Stanford, USC or (insert powerhouse here) he'd be a can't miss prospect. People are skeptical because of where he played, but he's the total package in terms of physical tools and intangibles.

If this kid turns out to be the next Troy Aikman and we passed because we want to try and squeeze out another 2 or so years out of an old, beaten down Romo it would be a terrible mistake. Absolutely horrible.

The Browns will probably draft Goff. Lynch will probably still be available at #4. Draft him. Just do it. He can apprentice behind Romo. He can be ready to go in if Romo gets hurt (a fairly likely scenario). I fear that Jerry actually believes Romo will play another 5 years, but that's nonsense. He's got another year or two; then he's done.

Draft Lynch. The man has the skills.

In todays NFL u dont wait 3 yrs to find out. And Romo plans on playing 4. I dont see 4 but i see atleast 2. Wentz isnt worth the top 4 pick. Theyre talking about Wentz at 22 to Houston. Which sounds about right. 10 days ago this guy was talked about as a mid RD2 early 2 tops. Now one article on espn comes out about maybe taking Wentz at 4 and all you ate it up like scripture. But let them say something negative about Dallas and its BSPN

This draft was going to be weak this yr, was the word this time last yr. Now all of the sudden theres possibly 3 RD1 guys. Same thing will happen next yr. There will always be QBs who will step up.

We probably won't have the #4 pick in the draft next year. Hopefully, we won't pick this high for a long time. To me it seems this is the opportunity to get the next premiere QB. I think we should just do it. Yes, I know, there are no guarantees, but there never are in any scenarios. A high draft pick is your best shot. We did great picking Aikman with the #1 pick. We drafted Staubach with a very low pick, but that was only because he had 4 years of Navy service ahead of him. He was the Heisman winner. If he hadn't had that service commitment, he would have been an extremely high pick also (probably with another team).

Who and where do you think we should take at QB?
If not the best prospects then who

I am not worried about a QB as long as Romo is playing.
I do want a quality back up though. That can come from free agency.
I want an impact starters with that first and second round pick.

When the time comes for a new starter the Cowboys can package pics to move up or if their record has them picking that high they can get their QB. He can start instantly and learn on the job. QBs don't need to sit on the bench to become NFL QBs.

So Dallas cant draft somebody later in the first round? Or round 2 or rd3? this yr? Or next yr? It has to be 4 overall? The way the NFL has its rules an average QB can be a good QB in this league now. Theyve marginalized the posistion. Cam Newton was a bad QB with steve Smith had no touch. all of the sudden you cant touch the WR you cant even look at him without a flag now he's a superstar?

It's the only way to turn this season into something positive. Very positive if it leads to your next franchise QB. I don't give a crap about any other position on the field with that pick. If the scouts grade them worthy, you make that pick. You get your guy even if you have to trade up to 1. If you don't then you've blown the draft and the offseason and you will most definitely look back on it as another horrific mistake from a front office that's cornered the market on them.

RB, WR, DE, DT, LB, CB....none of them are going to change the dynamic of this team. No matter how good the player is. Because we're about to enter the post-Romo era and without a QB we have no chance to compete for anything.

The issue isn't about doing it now because we won't be picking this high again. It's doing it now so we don't pick this high for a long time.

Go look at the 2011 draft. Tell me which teams regret what they did in the top 16 picks.

I'll wait.

Exactly..........fans be thinking we are drafting a backup QB at pick 4:laugh:

This is the heir apparent we are drafting.

I would take a QB each and every year, if necessary, until I got it right. Every other position is secondary to the QB position. I don't know how people here can minimize the importance of the position after seeing what happened this year without Romo? You can have one of the best receivers and OL in the game and it's all meaningless without a QB. You have absolutely no shot unless you hope for that one in a lifetime "Trent Dilfer" scenario.

And this team sure as hell doesn't have the 2000 Ravens D. Think they have proven that without a doubt.....

We aren't far from the 2000 ravens D

A couple of HOFers
A couple of other all pros
And a couple or regular pro bowlers
And we are there

Wentz appears to be "playing" himself into a top 10 prospect. Goff appears to be firmly in the top 10. Assuming Lynch doesn't bomb during the pre-draft process, he will also be in the mix. If you want a QB, the opportunity will be there early and will probably match up with your draft board. So it's really a tough call for a team that believes it's only a couple pieces away from competing for a SB. Fans may not feel that way, but i'm pretty sure Jerry/Stephen & co. put more stock in the team's 2014 success than the trainwreck of 2015.

I could be wrong but i have a hard time seeing this front office "passing" on more immediate help with a top 5 pick in favor of a QB who if everything goes well doesn't play in 3 years. This is not about what i would do.

actually Wentz has been toted on this board for more then a month [before Cowboys were named the North coaches] i was one of them but that has been the last 3 weeks.

2. The coaches are going to have a pretty good idea about Wentz before the draft and they will
certainly know about him at the end of the season [not 3 years].
All teams are in the business of acquisition and thats evaluation. You do your due diligence step
up to the plate and swing. There are no guarantees in this draft but you do your best.
If Wentz is that QB you just cant pass him up for a damn good player at any other position.
