Lawrence contract update

Stephen Jones said the Cowboys have made an offer to defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence recently and is hopeful a deal can be worked out before March 5, the deadline to use the franchise tag. The Cowboys will meet with his agent, David Canter, later this week at the combine in Indianapolis. “It’s the last day you’ve got to tag him but at the end of the day we know it’s not over if it doesn’t get done by then," Jones said. "I hate to put deadlines on anything. Would we like to get it done? I’d like to have it done yesterday. We’ve just got to continue to work.” If a deal is not finalized by March 5, the sides would have until July 15 to get it done. If no deal is done by then Lawrence would have to play on the franchise tag. If he is tagged a second straight year, Lawrence will not attend the offseason program, training camp and could miss regular-season games.

DLaw is gonna make it rain like PacMan in his prime!!!

I say FT tag him but still work on a LT deal while you have time to do so, hes asking for too much obviously and more time is need to hash out the details..I dont get why he doesnt go have the surgery..ridiculous to wait regardless of what happens..every week of rehab he misses sets him back..

I want him but not for top 5 money, 6-10 DE/PR money yes..if not tag him or trade him..

may end up tagging him so we can make a deal long term.

Him and his agent have so much leverage it's not even funny

1. They literally have nobody to take his place and are already weak in the middle of the defensive line.

2. Cowboys have almost 50 million in cap space for this year with literally every pro bowl caliber player already signed for 2019 (cowboys can't say we don't have money to pay you).

3. They have enough cap to sign him and Amari to deal this year and will still have near 90 million for 2020 after the cap raise. They surprisingly have alot of starters already signed for 2020 and would still have good cap numbers to sign zeke/byron/dak even with Amari/Tank deals this year.

TLDR: Cowboys have no replacement for Tank and are in a good money position for both 2019 and 2020. Tank's agent has a ton of pull because of this

Eh, kinda is. Contracts keep going up every year. He’s a proven, homegrown, commodity. He is our only war daddy. Can not afford to let the leader of the defense walk by going cheap.

Eh, kinda isn't. He's not one of the best pass rushers in the league. He's very good. He's not great. He will under perform his next contract.

It won't be a disaster like the upcoming Prescott debacle but it will still be a problem.

I'd tag him and look to replace him next year. If he wants to hold out, go for it. Waste a year of your prime.

I see your point. If you’re looking at his position as strictly rushing the passer, then yes. He’s very good. But if you’re looking at all-around game, dirty work, i.e. stopping the run, back side pursuit, leader of the defense, etc, then he’s elite for the scheme we run. You pay the man. He does it all. Tape doesn’t lie.

As much as Lawrence has been good, we are seeing a star born in Gregory. Yes he has had issues, but it seems like he's put that behind him. The guy was just a notch before Lawrence production in half the snaps after being out of the nfl for almost 2 yrs.

With Lawrence, it's a seller's market and his agent is very aware of that. The Cowboys do not have an excuse for not paying him what he wants except for they just don't want to. They have very little leverage, no 1st rounder to try and replace him and he is by far their best DL. They don't even have the leverage of the fans getting down on him if he is a hold out, he played the good soldier last year. And they haven't helped themselves by openly addressing two players on offense that are already under contracts.

The fact is every team is going to overpay for some players and I think he's the one on D for the Cowboys.

you and I had this convo before, and your right. As good as he is, I am not paying him Donald money..cant do it. If he doesn't come to his senses, tag him and find a trade partner, OR play him under the tag.

He's not really any better than Frank Clark in Seattle. These are very good players who fall just short of great. Don't pay great. There's life after DeMarcus Lawrence.

Even if he is, who do you put on the other end? Charleton? His lack of progress is what's got them in this situation. Spend a 1st for another DE in hopes that that gave them some better options when it came time to negotiate with Lawrence and so far, very little.

I agree, but he has already stated that he won’t sign another franchise tag offer
