Lawrence contract update

If he plays hardball, trade him. Take the Patriots approach and stock pile picks. Lawrence would def get you a first round pick probably more
How tradable is coming off a franchise tagged season.
I'm just going to relax, because I honestly think it's a win-win for the Cowboys.

Either they keep Lawrence, or they franchise tag him and get back into the first round by trading him. And I honestly think the Raiders, who have three first round picks, would be willing to part with one of them for D-Law.
why would a team trade a 1st rounder for a non QB at a 2nd year inflated franchise number?

Stephen Jones said the Cowboys have made an offer to defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence recently and is hopeful a deal can be worked out before March 5, the deadline to use the franchise tag. The Cowboys will meet with his agent, David Canter, later this week at the combine in Indianapolis. “It’s the last day you’ve got to tag him but at the end of the day we know it’s not over if it doesn’t get done by then," Jones said. "I hate to put deadlines on anything. Would we like to get it done? I’d like to have it done yesterday. We’ve just got to continue to work.” If a deal is not finalized by March 5, the sides would have until July 15 to get it done. If no deal is done by then Lawrence would have to play on the franchise tag. If he is tagged a second straight year, Lawrence will not attend the offseason program, training camp and could miss regular-season games.

If tagged he'll make $20 mil, they offered much less, D Law said they couldn't be serious

We do have a choice...

Sack up, and spend the money elsewhere... He's not the second coming!!

How many really good players could we get for 23M?? Screw him...

Problem is we know Dallas only uses fa to get back up type low level players on the cheap

As much as Lawrence has been good, we are seeing a star born in Gregory. Yes he has had issues, but it seems like he's put that behind him. The guy was just a notch before Lawrence production in half the snaps after being out of the nfl for almost 2 yrs.

This didn’t age well..

With the the Gregory suspension D-Law's negotiating position just became a whole lot stronger. This will now cost the Cowboys a few more million

I see your point. If you’re looking at his position as strictly rushing the passer, then yes. He’s very good. But if you’re looking at all-around game, dirty work, i.e. stopping the run, back side pursuit, leader of the defense, etc, then he’s elite for the scheme we run. You pay the man. He does it all. Tape doesn’t lie.
He disappears the last few games every season. Does elite players disappear like that?

you and I had this convo before, and your right. As good as he is, I am not paying him Donald money..cant do it. If he doesn't come to his senses, tag him and find a trade partner, OR play him under the tag.
Agree with both he is clearly not even close to Donald/Mack status. With bong man now gone he has all the leverage right now.

Eh, kinda isn't. He's not one of the best pass rushers in the league. He's very good. He's not great. He will under perform his next contract.

It won't be a disaster like the upcoming Prescott debacle but it will still be a problem.

I'd tag him and look to replace him next year. If he wants to hold out, go for it. Waste a year of your prime.
This off-season is already off to a terrible start...we can only hope they don't throw money at a 2nd tier QB.

This better be 'smart' money as much a demand that will really be riding upon this year's very cap room.

I kind of thought the same thing. I hope we don't get strong-armed because of the situations with Irving and Gregory.

Agree, but ya gotta figure that Irving/Gregory are gonna factor in somehow.

That would be good business. Lets see what happens.

I think it's clearly likely now that with the DL situation, The Cowboy FO will be forced to tag DLaw again just as
the signing period ends to maintain his rights. Most likely DLaw will sit out until the start of the season to try and force
Jerry's hand but, he probably will play out the season. I don't think Stephen will advocate breaking the golden piggy bank
to keep him. It's a problem that the FO will have to address in FA and the draft this year.

This whole scenario is putting a serious damper on our upcoming season. Hard to say what a saving solution might be but it'll require some wisdom. I'm starting to think in terms of taking a chance with trading him for a #1 pick and drafting the best DE we can get or otherwise, settle for a vet FA. It's really looking like a hot mess, in any event.
Yeah, it is. It's not like they're a DE away, they need some help on the interior and on the back end.

The only problem with that approach is we’re not the Patriots.
I could easily see us turn the picks we get for Lawrence into the DL equivalent of Mo Claiborne.
