LB - Anae & some other DL likely play both DE and LB

The inactive backup is still important considering the risks with this group of players.

Griffen: Age 32
Aldon Smith: Injury risk due to being out of football. Also a relapse risk.
Gregory: Relapse risk.

Only so many DEs they can keep on the 53, can waste roster spots on JAGs.

from what i've heard from those such as Peyton Manning, it is not the pass rush that makes the 3-4 edges so formidable but more so
how these edge rushers can line up to look like they are rushing .and then peel off in passing lanes at the snap of the ball. From either side.
Not certain whose coming in n a pass rush ..or whose dropping back in coverage passing lanes.
That's instant confusion and frustration to QBs in a blink.

The only thing is, that’s a recipe for an ACL tear with a career DE moving to LB and I’m not sure putting one of the DEs in jeopardy is that great an Idea it might kill the depth. Then again if it’s win now and Smith and Griffin are just here a few years then try it but be careful. Ellis had the Achilles, but he was the perfect opposite D ware.

Huh? where did u come to that conclusion " it's a recipe for an ACL tear " ? Are you basing off just Greg Ellis' solo achilles injury ?
Ellis also had the 1999 gruesome broken leg but he remarkably recovered from that as well.

In Nickel, 3-4 teams play a 4 man DL. DWare was a DE on a 4 man DL in Nickel.

The 3-4 is a run stopping defense. There are 3 DL in between the outside shoulders of the OTs in a 3-4 but only 2 in a 4-3.

Most 3-4 OLBs play DE in the 4 man Nickel DL.

That means a 3-4 is 5-2 with the DEs standing up.

I think some do.

I'd rather say 4-3 and 3-4. That's what distinguishes teams. Both predominantly play Nickel for passing downs.

That’s true the 34 that is normally run is a 52... I would love if they ran a true 34 because personally I preferred running on a 52 if you read the line right you only have to juke one of the 2 LBs and your gone. The more LBs the harder it is to break a big run, so more of a bend not break. I like the 52 too, there’s a time and place.

On the ACL, That’s based primarily on players in college switching positions in the pros it’s a bigger risk not only learning but it’s different movements playing DE vs LB. I’ve seen a lot of injuries, injuries can happen anyways but I’ve noticed the transition causes a lot of players issues and yes Ellis had one too but not based just off him.

Nickel is "base" in terms of number of snaps played.

For coaches "base" has a different meaning. Coaches refer to base as the run downs defense.

The primary alignment used on 1st and 10 vs 2 WR offensive sets really defines the "base" of a specific defense in terms of 4-3 or 3-4.

That's been my thought process after the cuts on how they're planning the defense.

That, and they're gambling on the hope that they don't suffer more LB injuries.
