I stopped posting on the board because I got tired of the frivolous arguments and entrenched positions between folks who choose to believe in seemingly naive hope and those who choose to conclude that all is lost. Lost in the middle are a lot of folks who seem to be disappearing from the conversation.
I'm back because I wanted to comment on what happened to the team and maybe bring home something that's been on my mind about the narrative of our team.
I think one thing everyone likes to talk about is leadership. The defense lacks it. The offense lacks it. Tony Romo is missing it. Garrett doesn't understand it. Lee is going to find it. X draft player will bring it. We point to silly things like the inability to win in December, or organizing practices during a lockout as evidence of its existence or non-existence.
This weekend should stand as a stark reminder of what leadership is about. Leadership is about more than making sure people know the plays, or where to line up. Leadership is more than benching a player who isn't performing well.
Leadership, is in reality the ability to get through to players who are probably wallowed in grief. It will be about Garrett talking to his players, and connecting with them on an emotional level. It will be about Rob Ryan getting his defense together to play in Jerry Brown's memory. It will be about Romo rallying people's focus, and being there to talk through what is happening. Leadership isn't about football, it's about people. It's measured in people, not performance. It's not something that any of us will see, or hear. It will happen behind closed doors, and its entirely possible it won't manifest itself in the final score. We could lose 40-0 tomorrow and still have great leadership in our locker room. The Cowboys lost a family member (two, most likely), and its up to the rest of the family to pull together, and that doesn't always mean on the football field.
I don't know about you, but I think we have leaders in the locker room. Whatever their value as linebackers and quarterbacks and coaches, I'm glad to have those PEOPLE there. Whatever that's worth, I'm glad we have them today.
