Leading rushers in the last 12 SB’s

Easier said than done. Did the Cowboys "grossly overpay" Emmitt in 1993? Or Deion in 1995? Based on what happened after they got paid, no. But if they had paid Emmitt and no more SBs resulted, then for sure there would have been howls from many that "they shouldn't have paid Emmitt that money".

It's also not so much the Cowboys overpaying, as waiting too late to do the deal, as in Dak, or too early, as in T. Crawford.

If you don't pay for past production, what do you base the payment on? Potential? Why is there a rookie contract scale? Partly because teams had to pay top draft pick quarterbacks, e.g. ridiculous money based on nothing but college play and a great combine show, then when they were busts the teams suffered for years.

Pay is based, or should be based, on a combination of past performance and anticipated performance, obviously you shouldn't pay a 36 year old running back top dollar for a 4 year deal (extreme example, yes), but why would anyone assume a 25 year old running back with 2 rushing titles under his belt wouldn't continue to be a top running back?

And the whole "you can get similar talent at much cheaper rates" is a fallacy most times, how many Joseph Randles or Troy Hambricks have there been in the league? The "we can replace player x with this low round rookie and he'll do just fine", but how well did Randle and Hambrick do?

Running backs and other players get paid more mostly because they ARE more talented, talented running backs don't, regardless of popular belief, "grow on trees"..

very true and those thinking zekes done over 2020 is ignorant and that list is full of élite qbs outside of Eli and he may make the HOF sometime way down the road given 2 sbs..

this was another thread that nit picked narrative and has a baseless premise.

sure you can use rookie or lower paid RBs when you have an Elite QB and really good defense coupled with great coaching..there were some really good RBs on that lists but at the backend of their careers and thats why they were cheaper but you still needed a very good RB regardless..

winning with your best players on rookie deals or discounted later contracts seems to be more of the theme, not nitpicking he RB positions. Zekes deal was cheap 2016-2018 why no SB LOL i mean if its only money that guarantees a sb wow the jets and browns should have 20 sbs between them :)

so much more then player salaries goes into wining a SB..smh

+ their salaries....highlights 1 of the glaring problems with how the cowboys built their roster and why it will continue to be a problem.

Obviously 2013 is slightly disingenuous because Harvin just happened to have a good super bowl despite Lynch being a big part of that offense...but even Lynch didn’t have a crazy contract.

Which one of those was where the team lost because they did not give it to their RB at the goal line though!

We get it you dont want Zeke in this team

I didn't say they were on big contracts when they won, I said some of them still played on contending, highly competitive teams, and that Brady winning so many limits the opportunity for others.

It's a bit off base to say a team that was in the Super Bowl this past season, and another team that went 13-3 and lost a close game in the playoffs to the eventual Super Bowl winner (Green Bay) were rendered ineffective because their QB's got big contracts.

Hell, Rogers last won the Super Bowl in 2010. Roethlisburger in 2008. Are we blaming 10-12 years of the Packers and Steelers not winning the Super Bowl on the fact their QB's are on a big contract now, or is it maybe that repeating as a Super Bowl winner isn't that easy for any QB not named Brady?
If you give 25% of the salary cap to your QB, you have to cut loose of a lot of good players.

That's the point.

They need better agents. RBs get used up and spit out. Get what you can. Not Zeke's fault that Jerry signed the contract. He could have played hardball and signed a FA back and moved on. He didn't.

we will find out with the bucs they have big list of key FAS to sign but hey TB12 , gronk an di heard Evans already stepping up to TAKE LESS to try and get them all back..

also whats lost in this is KC is paying a TE, WR, and QB top money.. also others like on defense.. they may have to pay the piper but they had great TE vs RB so they paid the TE , not sure how much bettering its in the EE area..

Dak you watching? :)

No one player/position = super bowl success.

Football is a team sport, to win you must have an overall good team.

Stop with the common misconception that having just the right QB or RB is going to give you super bowl success.

Ummmm Tampa pretty much has the same team Winston has last year. Brady comes in and they win it all rather than 7-9.

You are fooling yourself if you don't think certain players don't have a huge impact.

Yep, and he brings up this post when the team with the best running game won the game, and the best defense. Lets face it, good running teams have very good blocking Olines and can dominate games. We have seen it from Tenn, Balt and San Fran who have been very successful running the ball over the past few years. Fournette was an early first rounder who, absent attitude issues, probably would have been playing on a huge contract.

We had a cheap QB and a cheap RB and failed, not because of lack of production or success from the offense but that we have failed to field a successful D since the 90's really. There have been some decent ones but we have had failures all over for decades now.

Just bad management! Just can't consistently build a team.

Yeah because Brady does not throw a ton of ints. Winston put up some good numbers he also put up a lot of ints. Winston had talent around him but you just can't turn the ball over as he does

Different story then when emmitt got paid. We are now in a cap league. 2 completely different era's and he's still an outlier not the new norm. You pay a guy based on what you believe they can still do. And you absolutely can find cheaper replacements but only if you get it right just like drafting it is not an exact science but there is plenty of evidence out there that you can find a good RB way less than paying top dollar for one. Go ask the teams that pay big bucks for RB's and then regret it.

I thought this was about edge rushers... disappointed where this went. Oh well, Cowboys never won a SB without a good RB.

I know what your point is, but that doesn't justify misstating my words or presenting a less than an accurate representation of facts to back up your point.

The reality is it's true there are teams that have not done well after paying a big QB contract, but there are others that have. You can't say Green Bay and Kansas City aren't top contenders. And SF got to the Super Bowl after paying Garapollo.

And for the sake of an argument we can't just pretend that it would be common and expected for a Super Bowl winning team to win another one if it didn't pay a big QB contract, or that the only reason a team doesn't repeat is because it paid a high QB salary. Outside of Brady and the Pats winning even one is difficult enough.

This has been beaten to death. Laughably there are still a few lost homers that cant admit how bad of a pick Zeke was.

Taking Zeke 4th instead of Ramsey, then signing him to a monster extension because he held out in Cabo after his 3rd season while the rest of the team was busting their butts in training camp.

RB is where you save money on the roster. Easy easy decision. Especially when you spend so much money on the Oline and its a strength.

And now that we have a top 5 QB in his prime that can carry the offense, we definitely dont need Zeke. His salary and presence on the team has held us back the last 3 years and counting.

They also went 12-0 as well. Doesn't appear you need a $90 million RB. Blount was the leading rusher in 3 SBs for two teams, all wins.

The problem is Jerry & Stephen have a recipe in their mind from the 20th century, and apparently no one at the Star looks a current trends in the NFL.

Truly amazed that we don't even sniff SBs anymore.

which is why Jerry and Garrett were stupid to draft a RB in the top 5 (those are premium picks), then pay him 2 years early. RBs are easy to find, adjust to NFL easily and have a short shelf life.

do not invest heavy in rb is a very simple thing. the odd of it going bad are so much higher then it being worth it.

jerry not onley use a top 5 pick on a rb he also singed him to a market setting contract

the point is not to say rb is not importent but it is so easy to find rb production every where. fa, mid/late round in draft, udfa, practice squads...what ever.

i just hope zeke taught jerry a lesson that should be common sense.

there is finite resource in the nfl and using them on rb is stupid, stupid, stupid.
