I think this is great news. I had the feeling del rio was going to pull a parcells and bench leftwich soon. The team seems to respond better to garrard anyway, and just as is the case with Romo he's mobile. Jacksonville really needs this game, they're 0-3 on the road and due for a huge road win. I'm calling it here.

I don' t know if starting an inexperienced QB against the Eagles is the best to break him in. Their D can destroy good QBs and KILL bad ones (Bledsoe).

This isn't the Eagles' defense of 2002...

I read somewhere that Garrard played well last year. What were the teams he played?

wow. I haven't been watching Jax since they played us, so I have no clue how he is doing. Gotta say it is tough for me to hear this though - I always wanted Leftwich over TNew.

No its not, not at all. BUT,, they have just lost 2 in a row, the D has been getting ragged on all week on the radio shows for allowing the Rookie QB to move the ball on the last drive to set up the FG,, they are going to be going LIGHTS OUT.. I wouldn't want to play them this week.

Philly has lost the last 2 in games they were predicted to win I would love to see them drop 3 in a row but that may be asking alot. I do expect Jacksonville to give them a fight after all Jacksonville has a lot riding on this game as they stand 3-3 on the season.

Beat me to it. Leftwich has an injured ankle. No controversy here.

At the crossroads

David Garrard went 4-1 as a starter last year. Byron Leftwich was ineffective last week on a sore left ankle in Jacksonville's embarrassing loss to Houston. Leftwich's lack of practice time early this week made it likely Garrard will start when Jacksonville visits Philadelphia in Week 8. "I'll be ready for any situation," said the oft-injured Leftwich, who is signed through 2007, but is under speculation he might be pulled permanently in favor of Garrard, who is more mobile and signed through 2008. "I'm really tired of trying to showcase," said Garrard, who often has been the subject of trade rumors. Donovan McNabb, who has been the NFL's most prolific passer this season, will test Jacksonville's 11th-ranked passing defense. Kickoff on Sunday is set for 1 p.m. ET.

===================================

I happened to see the Houston game, and Leftwich didn't appear to be injured, but he sure threw the ball horribly. He was very inaccurate even with no pressure.

If Gerrard plays well after the embarrassing loss last week, there will be, injury or no.

Well, one report I heard said Leftwich said he was fine and his ankle didn't hamper his performance but that the coaches said it did. That sounded kind of odd to me.

This is an interesting situation for J'ville. Garrard is a gamer and seems to always play well when called upon. Last year he was very instrumental in their playoff run and then when the playoffs came against NE he went to the sidelines and Lefty played in his first game back. I was pulling for the Jags against NE and Lefty had a bad game. I thought at the time that if I was a real Jags fan I would want Garrard playing in that playoff game.

I actually believe, as crazy as some may think this sounds, that Garrard is the better QB of the two. He doesn't have the size and pure throwing ability of Lefty, but he's a winner.

Yeah, I've always liked Garrard and wished we could get our hands on him somehow. He may not be Super Bowl caliber, but he'd be better than the collection of jokers we've run out there this decade... :(

Believe that if you will. These guys are closer than most people realize. Garrard actually had better numbers than Leftwich last season.

This situation is a lot like ours. Bledsoe and Leftwich are very much alike (slow release, immobile, strong armed, pocket passers), and Romo and Garrard are more mobile and have faster releases.

Here's the situation, maybe on the surface it says due to poor performance because of his ankle, but if Garrard plays well, Leftwich doesn't get back on the field even when he is healthy. Bank on it.

Couldn't have said it any better.

As opposed to a Chinese Bledsoe?

That is probably a characterization that can go unsaid. They are all athletes. Not trying to be the Voice of Conscionce here but it starts here or it never starts.

Leftwich being the #1 QB going into this season was not set in stone. Garrard has a lot of backers down in Jax - Leftwich has the financial investment and draft pick investment and that is the reason he is starting.

Thank you. I was beginning to think no one else knew this.

That said, I like David Gerrard. He's a big, somewhat mobile QB with a nice arm.
