Legitimate Hype - Can You Feel It?

Last years squad was already a legit 12-4 team. Throw in 3 players ranked top 21 on their draft board for a late first, a late second, and some petty cash for a total stud to slide right in on a line that was already the league's best. 3 of those 3 coming from 'premium positions' - QB, T, Pass Rusher, CB.

Young guys entering the prime of their careers like Smith, Fred, T-Will, Martin, Bease, Crawford, Lawrence, McClain will inevitably improve. Romo will be healthier and Dez will be playing for a mega deal.

The D gets its captain and a heady playmaker with Lee coming back, adds a former pro bowler in lunatic Greg Hardy (27 sacks in his last 31 games) playing for a contract with a giant chip on his shoulder. A freaky athletic corner/safety pushes a former 6 overall draft pick to the dime. Man our defense suddenly went from an average group to a potential Top 5-10 Unit.

Our biggest question mark is IMO the most exciting proposition - 3 young runners with fresh legs eager for an opportunity to run behind this line. Randall showed flashes, Williams seems capable and McFadden could be the game changer. There certainly was a lot of meat on the bone and Run DMC has home run potential with the ability to grind a team out late.

And even if the committee can't carry a Murray sized load, I don't think we'll lose too much sleep leaning a bit on our franchise QB that's playing the best football of his life.

You can feel it, it's real hype - reminiscent of the 92 squad that tasted success and couldn't wait an opportunity to take what was theirs. This isn't HBO fueled, no more over-hyped offseason moves to overcompensate for drafting poorly and signing bad contracts.

This isn't just a bunch of talented individuals, this is a football team ladies and gentlemen, and a damn good one at that. They dress like one, talk like one, play like one and battle week in and week out. The Cowboys were always a tough team, Romo kept them competitive - but now its different, we are one of those teams that will blow you out if you don't come correctly.

You can see it in their interviews, you can see how they interact in the locker room - these guys are on a mission. Last year they were denied their opportunity this year I've got a feeling they are going to leave no doubt.

Go Cowboys.

It sure feels like we've been building this thing right all along. And we finally were in position to add significant defensive talent, which we desperately need. On paper, things look pretty dang good for the first time in while.

It's the NFL, though. So much can change, and change quickly. It's nice to go into a season feeling really good about the roster and the direction, but the proof's in the budding. 6-7 games are going to be decided by a play or two next year, one way or another. Let's hope we're in position to cash in on more of those again than we did in 2011, 2012, 2013. 'Cause that sucked.

My summarized early thoughts:
  • I think the club is more talented overall than last year and I'd be surprised if they don't finish 12-4 or better this season
  • The offensive may be be <slightly> downgraded, however, I feel like the defense has been significantly upgraded
  • While being generally happy, I can't mind around that the Cowboys are clearly better than the Seahawks or Packers. The best I can convince myself of is they are <as good> as them.
  • In my perfect world I've convinced myself the Cowboys are the BEST and I'd realistically expect them to go into every game with the assumption they are going to win. I don't feel that way and therefore I am slightly apprehensive about end of season scenarios

My answer is: "On Any Sunday." Therefore, I'm neither pessimistic nor optimistic. The NFL is the very last sport I would ever bet on. You never know what is going to actually happen. Games we should win, we've lost. Games we should have lost we've won.

So much sunshine being pumped. I just hope Romo doesn't get killed going into a season that should net him a deep playoff run. Not convinced yet.

Cautiously optimistic. Not comfortable at all with our RB situation. Am excited to see what we can do on defense. On paper it has improved a good bit.

I think 12-4 is a stretch. We had a magical year last year and tons of chemistry. I think 11-5 sounds more realistic.

10-6 if we're lucky. 12-4 if we get a real RB in here and stick to last year's plan.

Last years squad was already a legit 12-4 team.

They still have to win 12 games again this year, there are no automatic wins.
IN past when the team looked like a winner they failed, last year they looked like a loser and went 12-4.
They should do good enough to get in playoffs, and might have another good season if things go right.

the RB situation and a possible change back to passing is the wrench in the wheel .

It looks perfect until Romo or Dez goes down for the season.

Attrition always looms over every team. You know you're going to lose players to serious injury. The question is, who?

Teams can survive the loss of WRs -- not QBs.

The 12-4 season last years means our schedule this year will be tougher. With games against the Patriots, Falcons, Saints, Seahawks, Bucs, Dolphins, Panthers, Packers, Jets and Bills not to mention the NFC East games, it's going to be hard to match 12-4. That plus the fact that our defense is not going to be the juggernaut everyone here is predicting at least until maybe the 2nd half of the season and 10-6 would be outstanding.

We had legitimate hype in 2008.

We've suffered long enough as a fanbase. This team has to deliver. HAS to.

Thankfully, this group doesn't have the air of complacency and self-entitlement that the 2008 group did.

Also, because my inner nerd couldn't resist:
