Sure there are many reasons why a team fails but then you try and correct those deficiencies. I didn't pretend we were rebuilding, that was your excuse along with the other Garrett apologists. And you should be embarrassed for repeating the "competitive" meme. I mean, really, what kind of standard is that for this franchise?
These guys are playing in the Championship game and all 3 are doing it without a true franchise QB. These guys have absolutely accomplished more than Garrett but I guess when a guy sees competitiveness as some abstract measure for a failed coach, I can see where you would think they haven't accomplished more than Garrett even though at least one of those guys will be coaching in the SB in a couple of weeks.
Personnel? Don't put this all on McClay. Or are you saying we should make a change with our pseudo GM because I'd bet you've been pimping him pretty hard.
It’s actually not been my ‘excuse’ that we were rebuilding since 2013, when we were actually rebuilding. Our team was rebuilt and capable of competing at a high level back in 2014. That’s one of the reasons I disagree with the brain dead mantra about 20 however many years of mediocrity. You have to win your playoff games when you get there.
2007, 2009, 2014, 2016. We win two or three of the very close games in those seasons (well, maybe not 2009), our recent playoff history looks better. We didn’t. It is what it is, but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s a small statistical sample. 2014 and 2016 —the Garrett years—especially. It comes down to a play or two. Ask Mike Zimmer. And it’s tough to make those plays when you’re trotting our a below-average defense for most of those snaps like we have.
We have, and still do, need to improve the quality of defensive players on the roster. That’s not a knock on McClay, whose done a good job with the resources we have had. It’s just the reality of the league. It’s a personnel business. You need players to win.
