Let's all play GM

I think if we all know what's good for us we wouldn't give out ANY good advice.

We might get hit over the head, knocked out, kidnapped, and awaken in jerry's GM chair ready to turn this team around.

Shhhhhhhhh

1. Trade Martin for a 1st and a 4th.
2. Draft an OT in the first.
3. Draft an OG in the first.
4. Make Hanna the starter.
5. Play Witten no more than 1/3 of the offensive snaps.
6. Draft OBO in the 3rd.
7. Draft Andrews to replace Witten in the 4th.
8. Draft RB in the 4th or before.

3. Trade or cut beasly. Move Switzer up
I would see if we could extend Beasley after the down year. Beasley is great for what he does.

Beasley is still our one WR who can regularly beat single coverage, and he's doing it for a pittance. I'm baffled by the eagerness to dump him.

Switzer was underwhelming at his supposed specialty, and the league is doing everything it can to get rid of any kind of kick returns. He's done nothing. He's shown nothing.

Besides my general plan, I'll focus on the possibilities less talked about.

1) See if we can trade Byron, especially if we pick up a starting quality safety. We're overstocked at CB. But Byron is probably intriguing to other teams. He's a guy it makes sense to move, because he's less valuable to us than teams light on CBs.

2) Go after Purple Drank for the money he owes the team from his bonus. Money is always good. Being punked is always bad. Maybe we get him back for a cheap price. It would be nice to have him between Jaylon and Lee. We'd really have to protect ourselves with the contract.

3) Get a run defense specialist at MLB for the base. A 50% player, who should come cheap, whether rookie or veteran. Draft a developmental OLB to back fill Lee and Jaylon someday. There's simply no fire at LB. Jaylon practicing with no brace!

4) See if we can trade Lawrence if it looks like we have the depth at DE. Too many red flags for me to be happy about a long term contract, and I'm not happy about paying a franchise price for him in the meantime. I just don't think he'll be worth it on likely performance alone.

5) Thompson is very cutable at 1mil guaranteed, particularly if we pick up a speed WR in the 2nd. We should also look at WR cap casualties in July/August. Good bargains to be had, and we could really use an upgrade. We can think about trading Williams and eating most this year's salary. Probably could trade him for a conditional pick.

6) See if Beasley will extend cheap after the down year. Could be a bargain. He's a very good slot receiver. We could be shopping Switzer. I can see other teams having some interest for a guy with 3 years on his rookie contract. For the people thinking about trading Beasley, realize that we're likely going to get a pretty good comp pick out of him next year anyway.

7) Hanna or Swaim should go by the time the season starts. We should be giving Rico and Jarwin play time.

8) Got to get us a serious mid round RB. No gimmicks. A real RB who we could see as a starter. Somebody that would give us an option come the end of Zeke's contract.

4. Don't be afraid to use excess draft picks (2018 only) to trade up as players on your board slip.
Also, look for chances to get future picks from those picks. That usually translates into a full round profit. It's always a good bet, and with all our picks, it makes even more sense than usual.

Opinions and ideas for what the Cowboys have done/should do this offseason, free agency and the draft have been all over the map. Seems like everyone is an armchair GM.

So I'm curious what everyone would do from this point on if you were the Cowboys' GM for the rest of this offseason.

Include any trades, free agency signings, contract extensions and as specific/generic as you want to be on the draft.

I'll go first.

1. Extend Zack Martin, freeing up more salary cap.
2. Trade for Earl Thomas. Hopefully a 3rd rounder gets it done. If not, hopefully a 3rd + a 5th or so. Worst case, I trade a 2nd rounder. Steep price, but he's worth it.
3. Sign Navarro Bowman.
4. Draft the best OG/OT on the board in the 1st round. Unless a special defensive player like Veta Via, Roquan Smith or Derwin James are available/dropped enough to where I can trade up to get him.
5. Draft the best WR on the board with the next best draft pick. JuJu was a late 2nd rounder last year. Kupp was a 3rd rounder. Both were better than every single WR taken in the 1st round.
This sounds like a good plan.

Hanna retired

I'm going to consult with Will McClay and my Scouting heads first and then I'll come up with something. No one should be making any decisions unilaterally without talking to the guys in the know, first. That's what they get paid for... help the GM.
