Now this isn't to support or hate on Spencer just to compare players.
People need to understand SOLB and WOLB are two different positions.
In a aggresive blitz happy 3-4 defense like Pittsburgh and Green Bay the SOLB rushes the passer much more thana traditional 3-4 much like the Ryan 3-4. Look at the Jets for example. Their 3-4 SOLB hardly ever rush the QB but is used much more in coverage and run support.
Here are the top 3-4 SOLBs in the NFL for 2011 thus far and Spencer is among the group.

Lamarr Woodley 9 sacks and 36 total tackels
Clay Matthews 5 sacks and 28 total tackles
Antwaan Barnes 6 sacks and 20 total tackles (been passed around the NFL)
Ahmad Brooks 5 sacks and 30 total tackles(has more this year than any year in the NFL)
Ryan Kerrigan 5 sacks and 41 total tackles
Connor Barwin 4.5 sacks and 24 total tackles
Anthony Spencer 4 sacks and 30 total tackels

Barnes has been passed around the league and didn't cut it Baltimore and is really just a pass rusher and a liability in coverage and vs the run.
Ahmad Brooks is having the best year of his career. Not saying its a fluke year but jsut saying if your going off history those would be his stats at the end of the year.

Career stats for Spencer :D?

I think Spencer is a "good" but not "great" OLB.

If the Cowboys had a chance to get someone better, I would support the move, but I wouldn't diss them staying with Spencer either.

I agree. I think he is doing fine but would not be opposed should the spot be upgraded. At this time I would not think that would be a priority pick for the Cowboys

I agree, but the problem is Spencer is a FA after this season, and the Cowboys are more than likely going to have to pony up some serious cash to keep him in the fold.

If we let him walk, who is going to replace him? I can't see Butler playing full time, and the position is too important in a 3-4 to leave to chance.

The Cowboys are in a bad spot here. If they want to retain Spencer, they're going to have to pay a good player great money. If they let him walk, they risk having a gaping hole on defence next year.

If they want at least equal return from anyone in FA then they're going to have to do that anyways. We'll probably slap the franchise tag on him to give our selves another year to figure out what to do there with the added bonus that he'll be on a 1 year deal in case he thinks about pulling a 2010 again

No way do you put the franchise tender on a guy like Spencer.

Just let him walk and spend a 1st or 2nd rounder for an immediate starter from the college ranks. This is probably the better option anyway.

Here's another fact that should be considered.

Anthony Spencer: Only starting SOLB to play opposite of DeMarcus Ware.

Franchise tag?

What?

Guarantee a guy like Spencer about 10M?

We have much bigger needs then OLB

For a year, who cares? It frees us up to spend draft picks on more pressing needs without creating another hole

Last I checked, there wasn`t anyone in FA better than Spencer.

That means a lot of 3-4 teams are going to want him. Keep in mind that there have been several reports over the years that seem to indicate that other teams see Spencer as a valuable player.

So the options are 1)franchise him 2)pay him a lot of money or 3) take our chances in the draft.

Truthfully, none of those are appealing. If the Cowboys didn`t think that Spencer fit into their long term plans, they should have drafted his replacement last year.

Good point.

I just want somebody more disruptive than Spencer. I'm tired of our pass rush being Ware or bust.

What do you mean who cares? That's like 8% of the entire salary cap on an average, or above average, player who might just walk the next season.......in which case, there'd be a hole the following season!

It's not going against the cap for several years so it's really not that big of a deal and the following season we might have been able to address a few more pressing needs trough the draft so we can look for a replacement there, Spencer might have improved to the point where he's worth his asking price or someone better might be available in FA.

We already have several needs on this team, Franchise him and we give our selves another year to figure out where we want to go at OLB without creating another, it's far more preferable then over paying someone for a long term deal for what's probably going to be the same production at best

You could also upgrade the DE position to add pass rush, you know a position that is even weaker than SOLB?

What fans are looking for from that SLOB is not another Ware but a Tony Tolbert and 8-10 sack guy who was costinet in his play and could be counted on to take advantage of the double and triple teams on Ware
