He doesn't understand that Sharp wasn't providing a mathematical correlation. He was showing a statistical trend which is different from a statistical correlation.
The main point where I disagree with Sharp is the claim that something must have happened when you have an outlier. That's not true at all. Outliers are worth investigating, but often times an outlier is just something that happens for no reason at all.
But the entire argument of 'correlation does not imply causation' is typically used by those with only a novice education in statistics. It sounds smart, but it's usually a weak attempt to argue against statistics that don't agree with their point. And in this case it really doesn't apply because Sharp isn't even showing a mathematical correlation.
