I never use full nortons security suite.

I do however use the corporate edition and it does not bog my computer down like others have.

Of course it is also nice to get it for free because we need it for work and I just take it home and install it as well.

Same with MS products like xp and word and so on.:laugh1:

Yeah....the perks .....goto love it :)

All I can say is DO NOT use norton's antivirus. It slows your computer down way too much. I'm waiting for the subscription to run out then I'm switching to something else.

We run Nod32 at my schools.....works well.

AVG is also a free one and people I know love it and works well

Are you sure it might be a virus.....?????

Are you using a router......have you checked all your internet connections settings?

Are you getting a ip address from your router? etc?.

Just wondering :)

Mash, I'm using a home router connection called Netgear. I have Comcast cable for the computer that is connected to the Netgear router. The Netgear software is installed on the boys computer. He cannot connect, yet my wife and I can connect to the net through the router even though his computer is now disconnected.

I ran McAffe Virus, nothing. I ran a program called "regcleaner" and a program called "Just Regestry" and a program call "AdWare"...it's all clean.

I just now took the computer back upstairs, rebooted, and he still cannot connect his computer.

So...it looks like this....the Comcast comes into the router in his room. The software for the router was installed on his computer that does not connect...my downstairs computer has a card to connect to the router...and my wife has a laptop that connects to the internet.

Sorry for the late reply

Is your sons computer plugged directory to the netgear router? Both yours downstairs comp and your wife's run wireless? Right?

Plug your sons computer directly to the router with a ethernet cable goto Start>run and type in cmd then in the box type ipconfig....the address that is stated beside gateway is your router address.... should be 192.168.0.1

You should be getting a address like 192.168.0.x subnet 255.255.255.0 and the gateway should be 192.168.0.1

Now open your internet browser and type in http://192.168.0.1

You should be able to log in using the username Administrator and the pass is password.......this is the default ......if you forgot your username and pass to log in.....u can easily reset your router by pushing the tiny pin hole in back with a paper clip....this will reset your router to the defaults and you can

log in using the username and pass I provided.

From there you can run the setup again........comcast is cable internet? right? Therefore you dont need a username and pass to connect to the internet.....they just provide a username and pass for you email.....correct?

*waring*

If you run setup on your router again from the default settings you will need to setup the wireless settings again....I dont know if u use a pass or leave it wide open.....WEP pass protection is what most people use......if so...u will need to reconnect your other two comps again

Also....are you sure your sons comp doesnt have any firewall running? look in your taskbar by the clock and shutdown anything that is running there.....sometimes firewalls can prevent internet access.

Also...have you unplugged your router and modem for at least a few minutes and then plugged it back in? Sometimes that will fix the issues?

Mash, I did the ipconfig and got nothing but 0.0.0.0

Also was a message that said the ip address was in conflict with another computer on the network?

I also reset the router with a paperclip...unplugged both the modem and router, tried to do a "repair" on Netgear...says it's working fine...but no ip address at the son's comp...

Your router is assigning the same ip to two computers.........you can either make sure your router is set to assign more then 2 computers by logging into your router as I mentioned before.....

or

right click on your network place icon on the desktop go to properties......a window will open and right click on local area connection and choose repair

If that doesnt work you can try to type in a ip address manually......right down the ip address of your two computers that work........

192.168.0.x
255.255.255.0
192.168.0.1

and the DNS that is shown

make sure when you do it manually that you have everything the same except the ip address

so....your two comps might be 192.168.0.100 and the other 192.168.0.101.....you should set yours to 192.168.0.102

sorry....just read that you reset your router.....hmmm.....should be assigning a address......if it gives you a conflict error message then you must have a connection.....so try the repair method or the manual address

Try this first.....sorry

Go to Start|Run. Type "cmd". Hit enter.
Windows will open the command prompt.

In the prompt type "ipconfig /release" and hit enter. After that type "ipconfig /renew" and hit enter.

Wow....5star....damn computer is being stubborn :)

Make sure your network card is set to DHCP....

then type this....

try this

Open a command prompt

type in "ipv6 uninstall"

without the quotes

This should solve your problem

If not type this

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt and hit {enter} reboot and all should be fine :)

If this all fails.....then I think you may to use the system restore option and restore to a previous date that it worked and then type

start>run and at command prompt type in ipconfig /release all

I hope this works :)

McAfee - Antivirus Software and Intrusion Prevention Solutions

The best up to date, automated process by any company.

We have a couple million dollar contract w/ Symantec here at the state, and I hate the product.

I use McAfee at home and for all of my clients. It is a fantastic piece of software. It does it all.

I think you can pick it up for about 60$ at Best Buy. Make sure to get the WV and the Internet/Content firewalling.

Good luck

Yeah, we have a large contract with Symantec and I cant stand it. Their Corp client is so bloated and resource hungry, I've seen it bring many a system to a crawl. Typcailly I use the free Grisoft Antivirus at home.

For your machine, your solution depends on how much work you want to do. I'm paranoid about viruses, root kits and zombie attacks, so I re-image my machines every 3-4 months minimum (or as needed with an infection). If you dont already have the program, I'd buy Norton Ghost for backing up and restoring your PC.

1) Use Ghost to backup your infected hard drive to a spare slave hard drive via a USB cable.

2) once your infected hard drive is completely backed-up, format the infected drive and run a fresh install of your Windows OS (dont forget to update service packs and patches as well as your antivirus program).

3) drag and drop your backed up files from the usb slave drive to the hard drive of your freshly installed Windows OS.

Be careful with Circuit City, Best Buy, etc. Their employees are most likely making slightly above minimum wage, and they have been known to view and steal your personal data:

you also may want to try an "ipconfig /flushdns" after the release and before the renew.

Mash, I think I will just call Comcast tomorrow and have them talk to me in person. I just cannot figure out why I cannot obtain an ip address from THEIR modem...the router works fine.

Maybe they can walk me through some stuff on the phone. It might be easier to follow the instructions.

However, I really do apperciate the time and effort that you guys have given me...a total stranger! I'm greatfull for that...totally.

I will keep you posted on what happens...and also, just the bits and pieces of info that I learned from you was great! I have a better understanding of how this stuff is supposed to work, although I cannot get it to work!!

If they cannot help me then I don't know what to do because the software for Netgear is on that computer and I'm not sure what will happen if I format the c: and d: drives...I'm afraid if I do that then my and my wife's computer will stop working...and I cannot have that!

:bang2:

Thanks again, I'll be back...

;)

the reason for your error is because someone else is getting that address....either manually or assigned.

Are you sure your sons computer is set to receive a address via DHCP?

make sure his tab on his network connections is set to receive a address automatically.

Make sure your other computers also are set to receive the address automatically.

right click on network places.....goto propertise....right click on local area connection and double click on TCP/IP......make sure all is set to receive it automatically.

****** you dont need to install the comcast software*******

If you plug your sons computer directly to the comcast modem instead of the router.......can he get on the internet?

If so...then we know your sons computer is working properly and its the router.....if not and you have your sons comp set up to receive a address automatically.......keep it pluged in and run the network wizard....remember its a direct connection and there is no need for username and pass.....and your dont have a proxy....

right click on internet explorer.....go to the connections tab and run the wizard......

If your son now can get on the internet connected directly to the comcast modem then we need to adjust the router.

reset your router by pressing in the button at the back.....this will reset it to default......now make sure the comcast ethernet cable is plugged into the internet slot and plug your sons into one of the other ports......try a different one that you were using.

all should be fine now and you will need to log into your router and setup a wireless secruity so others cannot use your internet.

If all fails......have you tried system restore options? Its rather easy and you will only lose files that you have done since the restore point your picked.

I hope you can get it to work......comcast I dont think will help you with it seeing how I think its the router or your sons setup causing the problem and not comcast modem. :(

Sorry 5stars but if your sons comp doesnt work connected directly to the comcast modem and your tcp/ip address is set to auto .....then you might have a hardware problem with your network card.
