Mash, I think I will just call Comcast tomorrow and have them talk to me in person. I just cannot figure out why I cannot obtain an ip address from THEIR modem...the router works fine.

Maybe they can walk me through some stuff on the phone. It might be easier to follow the instructions.

However, I really do apperciate the time and effort that you guys have given me...a total stranger! I'm greatfull for that...totally.

I will keep you posted on what happens...and also, just the bits and pieces of info that I learned from you was great! I have a better understanding of how this stuff is supposed to work, although I cannot get it to work!!

If they cannot help me then I don't know what to do because the software for Netgear is on that computer and I'm not sure what will happen if I format the c: and d: drives...I'm afraid if I do that then my and my wife's computer will stop working...and I cannot have that!

:bang2:

Thanks again, I'll be back...

;)

Im confused...

You are getting a ip from the comcast modem......its giving one to your router and your router then gives ip 192.168.0.x to your other computers........thats why your other computers work.......all three computers should be pluged into the router or if some are wireless they connect to your router and not your comcast modem.

Its your router or your sons comp that is the issue......I think anyways. :)

Exactely, Mash. I have the 193.168.0.xxx ip address on this computer...so does my wife's.

I think it might be a hardware problem too because Friday I had to change out the video card that he had installed for some Star Wars game or whatever...it had a fan on it.

Well, that failed so I switched it out for the old one so that I could at least see the Windows screen...but I had that internet problem prior to switching out the video card...

Is there a network card too?

You can have the modem hooked up with a USB cable.

You can have it hooked up to an onboard network connection...in other words your motherboard in your computer has a network adapter.

Or you can have an individual network card that was put into your computer.

The cable from your sons computer and to your modem...is it a USB cable?

If so it could be the cable is bad or the usb port has went bad. I had that problem one time.

No, it's like a phone cable but the plugs are bigger...the cable is not usb if you mean like the small cables that have metal on the ends?

I wonder if I should go buy one of those first?

Hmmm....

How do I fix that port? Can I just buy a card for 30.00 or so and try that?

Perhaps you should reinstall your NIC drivers.

I have no idea what you are talking about! :bang2:

What you have is a ethernet cable........varies in color...blue...white...etc.

Have you tried to plug that cable into the comcast modem to your sons computer? Its should give you a address and you should get on the internet.

Thats what I mentioned before.......goto to device manager and locate your network adapter and unistall.....reboot and if its a card like dlink...etc....winxp should find it automatically.....the driver is located in windows/system32 folder.

Just an update on my computer problems...

Well, since I have become so damned confused, so frustrated, so whatever you call it, I made a decision to enroll in a local trade school so that I can get The PC Technician A+ Certification.

I just completed my first lesson and passed my first exam!! ;)

It's a little overwhelming at first and I'm sure that it's going to get much harder, but I'm ready for it...and hopefully in 6 months I can take the A+ Certification sponsored by CompTIA.

Now my journey starts...

;) ;) ;)

My mind is spinning. I have no freaking clue how to fix a PC! I don't know what I got myself into this time!

I finished my PC repair course and passed, but the only thing that I learned.....?

Now I know how to mess things up in a PC!

To take the A+ is killing me! Please help me....please!!

:eek:: ;)

I would be better off as a street bum than try to learn this stuff!

Carry on...

Some people take to things faster.

I have not taken the classes for it but have a great deal of exp working on puters. Heck my work usually tags me to fix all the puters and with some of the people we have working, that can be a job:laugh2:

Some people can learn it all and still just don't seem to get it, not a bad thing, it just does not come easy to them.

I have come to a universal truth concerning computers.

If it is a virus or software problem, when all else fails you can always reformat the hard drive and install the operating system from scratch.
You can either back up the data/programs you want and then do the reformat or just reformat everything.

I do this around once a year. I have found that sometimes, even if there is not a problem, if you reformat and install an OS from scratch your puter will run much better. As a matter of fact I just did so Monday. Sure it is a pain to download all of the updates for various programs, but once again the puter always runs better after you clear out the useless clutter. Plus if you have a virus, trojan or spyware on your puter. Reformatting is about the only thing that pretty much guarantees that you get it all off...even a trojan that might be in your puter but has not activated itself at the time so you never know it is there.

Concerning hardware. When in doubt you can eliminate each component IF, and this is a big IF, you have back up parts available to do it.

Sometimes it is just a simple fix, a network card for example. Other times you just have to go through each part. Like if your puter just will not start up. Could be a fan, could be a power supply, could be a motherboard. Just have to try each one until you get it.

Trial and error aka exp is the best teacher IMO.
