Linebacker Depth

One really nice part of this draft was our effort to get some more linebacker depth. We were riddled by injuries last year at linebacker and now we've stocked together somethings. I'm not sure if we have done enough if we lose our starters again this year, but it is a step in the right direction. Especially when you consider Holloman will be in his second year, and Wilber will probably get another chance at linebacker.

Sean Lee
Bruce Carter
Justin Durant*

DeVonte Holloman
Kyle Wilber

Anthony Hitchens
Will Smith

Still it is a reminder that we still have a lot of work to do on defense. We will have to address all 3 facets next year in the draft. Fortunately our offense seems to be fairly self sufficient at this point, mainly depending on re-signing some players. We've had a lot of success drafting offensive players recently, and it may really set us up for the next 4-5 years.

I may be alone in thinking this, but I wouldn't write off the chance that Hitchens starts in the middle and Lee gets moved to the WILL.

I wouldnt be surprised to see hitchens and Smith start eventually this year. Durant and carter are terrible. Lb has some depth now but still needs to be addressed along with dl and s in the next 2 years of drafting.

Coach Jerry already has said Sean Lee won't be moving out of the middle in an interview. But, all that really means is that it isn't the plan, and not that it might not happen in the future. With the number of players we had on D looking lost at times last year, it will probably take Hitchens a while to learn to play all of the linebacker positions anyway. Meanwhile if Lee stays healthy, no problem. If he goes down again, the future will probably be decided by how well Hitchens or another player performs in the middle when called on. One of them will have to put on a pretty good show for Garrett to make the switch, IMO, because Sean Lee is the heart of our defense, and about as intense as a person can be. That's going to be very hard to replace.

I was hoping to draft either his replacement or his clone, we need 2 guys like him on the field at all times. Like when Chicago had Both Urlacher and Briggs at the same damn time. Que the music, "2 Bad *****es At The Same Damn Time!!!"

Jerry says a lot of things.

I hope one of these rooks eventually spells Durant, not a fan of that cat...

Not a fan of Durant either.. i think Carter is 10 times better than he is. I think one of either Holloman or Hitchens will end up starting for us.
