Yes, because of the players they had they still had one of the better offenses, but what history tells us is that there are three ways to win Super Bowls: Have an elite offense, have an elite defense or have a balanced team (both in the upper half/top 10). I believe we had a few years where we had the components for an elite offense and Garrett's philosophy held us back. It was still good enough to make us a playoff team, but then we couldn't contend because we weren't innovative against the better defenses while their offenses beat up on our defenses.

If Garrett/the Cowboys had focused resources on the defense, we wouldn't have had that offense. And then when the Joneses forsook free agency, there was no way we were going to have both at the same time. I also think some of the DCs may have looked better here if they'd had better players to work with. I mean, most fans wanted Quinn ran out of town after last year's playoff performance, but there's only so much you can do when you are dealt a bad hand.
They couldn't contend cause those defenses were bad. Top 10 offense with Romo was really good but he wasn't the best QB in the league. They needed a defense that could stop the other team sometimes. Garrett didn't pick Kiffin, that was Jerry. Garrett couldn't even pick Kiffin's replacement. They always put resources on defense, just not the right ones. The guys Marinelli liked were terrible, they needed a better DC. I think the Mazi pick did Quin in here. Assuming he is the one who signed off on him and he's such a disappointment.

We had a Hall of Fame tight end, three future Hall of Fame linemen, top-notch RBs (Murray and Elliott), at least one first-rounder at receiver for both Romo and Prescott. We had to components to be elite, but Garrett's mano-y-mano system added nothing to those components. The Joneses poured most of their resources into the offense but Garrett didn't make the best use of those resources. Frankly, I think a coaching staff like the Patriots had would have used rub routes to supplement the talent. Other coaches would have used more motion, which we really only started using when Moore became OC, or other nuances to not make it where our guy has got to beat your guy.

Not excusing the defense, but we didn't spend near as much in resources on that side of the ball under Garrett, so we needed the offense to carry the load. Maybe you blame the QB; I blame the coach.

Overall, though, the blame goes back to the Joneses. They are the ones who didn't supplement those teams with defensive players who could do enough to propel a top 10 offense on in the playoffs. They've always left us a few needs short since Jimmy left because of their ineptness.
