I know it's early but I'm about to write these two guts off. They can't stay on the field. The lack if cohesion killed this OL last year and its the same story this year. When will the starting 5 take a snap together? Week 1?

Agree. Livings is serviceable but can be replaced. Bern is garbage. I never liked him and I am hoping, praying, and meditating that Leary beats him out lol.

I actually think neither one of those guys will be starting. I have this feeling it is going to be Smith/Leary/Costa/Fred/Free Which might be the best 5, now I didn't take into consideration of Parnell beating free out.

Fred will be starting at center. I don't see Costa beating him out nor do I see Fred's potential being maximized at guard. At guard he will have trouble pulling and Costa struggles with his power 1 on 1 which Fred excels at(he has potential to be one of the NFLs most dominant drive blockers).

If the Cowboys want to get their 5 BEST OL on the field, them Livings and Bernadeau will be on the sideline.

It's not about Costa "beating" him out it's about trying to get the best 5 on the field and if they feel for this year that Costa and Fred on the field at the sametime will put 2 of the best on the team out there why does it matter? Obviously has stated before Fred played OG just fine and Wisc and Costa is a smart player who knows how to get into position to block his guy so I don't see the problem.

Might be better putting Costa at G in that case.

Livings is garbage too. The guard positions should have been upgraded this offseason.

Livings was rated the 16th best guard in the NFL.

If someone else has alternate ratings I'd love to see'em.

The Cowboys don't give out their grades, but Broaddus has said that he's been told that they graded Bernadeau higher. He has mentioned that last year Livings struggled to pull which imo could be a big reason for the grade difference.

Despite his current injury status, they have said Livings lost weight and is in much better shape.

I'm not about to act like an O-line expert, but every O-line grader I saw had Livings listed as our best lineman last season. If we want our "best 5 on the field," I'd find it hard to believe that someone who was rated #1 would no longer be in the top 5. Though I think the starting O-line with the most potential would be:

LT Smith, LG Costa, C Frederick, RG Leary, RT Parnell

Thank you for bringing some of the folks in this thread back to reality, Mikey.

What about Livings a year older with a chronic knee issue that keeps him in the training room? I would not take my chances with this guy. Callahan needs an athletic, pulling left guard that has youth and upside! Cough, Frederick, cough.

I would agree but according to BB he doesn't think that's what would happen

Is his knee chronic?

I've not seen/heard that.

Apparently Mickey said today that he's having the same knee issue he had last year in camp.

Two things really alarmed me about the OL last year:

1. Due to the injuries with Costa, Livings and Bernadeau through training camp, the OL had no shot to gain continuity.

2. When the OL gained some sort of continuity throughout the season, they didn't improve IMO.

Can we really expect much difference this year because of a rookie center? It's the same story with Jerry's guards. They're either banged up, not practicing, or recovering from offseason surgery. I'm done with em'!
