I seem to be reading conflicting reports and opinions on which of these Guards was better in 2012 ?
Can some of our Zoners who watch game film offer an educated opinion on which one is better ?
Thanks !
During the first half of the season, Livings was our best overall lineman (simply because Tyron Smith was adjusting to left tackle). He got a good push in the running game and was consistently in position to negate the pass rush to his side.
Whether it was because of injury or just defenses figuring him out, he started getting beat by quick moves to the inside in the second half of the season. (Canty tore him up by setting up an outside move then ripping to the inside.)
Bernadeau, who was set back by injuries at the start of the season, was the worst run and pass blocker in the first half of the season. Defenders were overpowering him, then setting him up, getting him offbalance and beating him with speed moves. A lot of that can be attributed to him getting a late start learning the system and meshing with the line. He got much better with his slide-and-protect the second half of the season, but was never a very good run blocker.
Some of their struggles might be attributed to the center position being in flux and then Cook's issues there with the run blocking, and they might be better after more time in the system and familiarity with the other linemen.
Then again, both have their flaws that will always cause some blocking issues until Dallas upgrades the line. I believe (if health allows) they will be better even if we do nothing to the line, but if Dallas truly wants to build a championship team, it needs to put more championship-caliber players on the line than just Smith.
