@toddarcher: I'd go with Todd Gurley but it will all come down to health. If his knee looks sound, then I think he'd be a great fit. But if his knee checks out OK, then I don't know if he makes it to No. 27. I do think he has the look of a special runner. I think Melvin Gordon would also be a solid fit for what the Cowboys want to do. He put up amazing numbers at Wisconsin. He has a feel for the run game that you don't see in a lot of young backs. He's patient but not slow, if that makes sense. How is he in the pass game? Well, that's a question and we know how much the Cowboys like Murray in the pass game. Duke Johnson is interesting as well. Is he big enough? But I'd go with Gurley, Gordon, Johnson among these guys.

If the Cowboys drafted one of these players, the running back position would then turn to a manageable 5 year window and in a price range that is immensely more conducive to the projection on cap figures as well, than would Demarco Morris right now.

I hate that everyone is jumping on this Gurley in the first bandwagon.

Please don't use a 1st on a RB
Coming off injury

Well if the injury is serious, no team will draft him 1st 2 rounds I'm guessing.

Agreed. This draft is so deep at RB, I don't even want one in the 2nd unless it's BPA.

I think there are other altenatives in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. I don't want to waste a 1st rounder on a RB when we have glaring needs elsewhere. I'm not a fan of drafting for need ... but RB can wait.

Rb is a glaring need if Murray is gone and Randle is cut.

Because there is likely no day 1 starting DE's to be there at 27, if Gurley is there it's a no brainer for the Cowboys.
He is the next coming of AP about mid-season this year. Do it Jerry and the second coming of the triplets will be
complete.

On the defense for last season, the Cowboys only added two mediocre defensive players, while losing Ware and Hatcher.

What did carry the Cowboys, was their offensive balance. Not to mention their lead running back outdistanced the next best in the NFL by over 500 yards rushing.

The rushing element is a dynamic influence on success for the Cowboys...not just a pie chart reference for winning.

I'd call Hitchens a little better than mediocre.

If there is no defensive player that can make an immediate impact at 27 I would definitely take Gurley. Don't forget our run game took a lot of pressure off our defense last season. This is obviously contingent on Murray not being here. IF murray is gone RB is now one of our biggest needs

Try rereading for what is stated...the Cowboys only signed two mediocre players. They lost very good players in Ware and Hatcher in the mean time.

This points to additions of 'diamonds' not changing or improving a team's chances to make a last step. Ask the Broncos and Philadelphia about that progression. Those two were trying to get a Lombardi following previous success. And yea, Hatcher went to Washington.

I prefer not drafting a RB in round 1. Trade down, get an extra 2nd or 3rd. Draft Bennett from Ohio State, or another DL if there. Can get a RB later in the 2nd, or even the 3rd, depending what defensive player is there, or BPA.
I think we can find a RB in the 3rd since there is depth at RB in this draft.

However, if Gurley is selected at 27, it means we need a RB, and IF he will be ready by TC, I would not complain.

What round did Dez Bryant come in? As to the past, what rounds provided Tony Dorsett and Emmitt Smith?

Who is this Demarco Morris you speak of? ;) :)

What does this have to do with anything?
Cowboys needed a DE in the 80's, and selected Kevin Brooks in the 1st. I don't think he ever played a down in regular season play.

Don't be binded by flip flop of the side of the ball. The defense can improve greatly just by the presence of both Sean Lee and Rolando McClain on the field at the same time.

But the top quality running backs that have withstood test of time, for the Dallas Cowboys, have all be acquired in the first rounds...as have the wide receivers that excelled. If that doesn't pass muster, just stick with a defensive monotone.

As to failure of sky is falling, abstracts can be applied to any position. But this year's running back group is one of the very best going into the draft. Take that value or leave it if biased in objectivity.
