I get it. I just think it takes away some of the meaning when the 8th best player at his position makes the Pro Bowl. Also, does Luck get credit for declining a Pro Bowl offer? If not, it makes it meaningless when Andy Dalton has more Pro Bowl appearances than Luck, or Brady for that matter (who's usually never eligible for the Pro Bowl since he's likely playing in the Super Bowl).
A replacement player only gets credit for making the Pro Bowl if they play in the game. That's one catch to try and get them to play in the game because if they do accept the invite they'll have a Pro Bowl on their record which means a lot to players. Making a Pro Bowl team is a skin on a players wall. The players that get voted into the Pro Bowl such as Brady who didn't play in the game because he's preparing for the SB or a player who declines to play in the game because of an injury still gets credited for making the Pro Bowl.
A player like Dalton who was a replacement may "play" in the Pro Bowl more than Brady or Luck but he won't have as many Pro Bowls on his resume because he didn't get voted in as many times as they did. It takes away from the game to have replacements for players who got voted in but that's been going on for years. I mentioned Dan Marino only played in one or two Pro Bowls but was voted in a number of times.
