I've been through there a few times (although not lately), and the damn town is like a circus. Nothing but UFO shops, Museums, and T-shirt shops. All about the UFO.

They have a vested interest in keeping the truth suppressed. It makes alot of money.

Just got an email from the career office telling me that I am probably going to White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. that is near Los Cruces. ANYONE here live near there or know anything about the area?

I used to, when I was a kid... the closest city is El Paso, probably no more than a half hour away...

Which means Juarez is close by, too... :D

Chief (I think) and even Hos may know something... Hos seems to know the southwest pretty well.

Hos grew up in and around El Paso...

You see the same kind of crap in Rachel, Nevada because of "Area 51."

Oh well, I guess if Tombstone, AZ can capitalize on the Gunfight at the OK Corral other towns can have their themes too.

His work did not die with his death though. The science did not die and his labs did not pick up and move.

Don't you find it the least bit coincidental that of all the places on earth to "crash" it would be in that area?

There's no coincidence, the aliens were scouting our rocket program... the military calls it "recon"... :D

George W Bush was born the year between Goddard's death and the Roswell incident.

Coincidence? ....... I think not.

I have alot of fond memories of WSMR. If you like to hunt, you'll have a good time. Plenty of snakes and spiders. I was stationed there in '82-'83. We would go to Juarez quite often. Las Cruces had some very good food. The best comment I can make about the place though, it's the people. Las Cruces was a very friendly place when I was there.

Chief lives in Las Cruces. Otero1 lives in Alamogordo. Those are the 2 biggest places on each side of White Sands. I was born in Las Cruces and I know it well.

You'll be within easy drives of Ruidoso. Horse racing and skiing there. Got a brother who lives there now.

Carlsbad Caverns is not that far away.

Roswell is close, so you can go learn all about UFOs from the conspiracy theorists there who don't know who Robert Goddard was.

If you happen to be into treasure hunting, since you are a government employee, you might want to check out the rumors about the treasure at Victorio Peak. My Aunt and Grandmother were part of the excavation attempts the Government allowed there after Doc Noss dynamited it shut instead of opening it up. My Aunt still believes the Army excavated all of it out and screwed Doc out of his discovery.

Interesting area you're headed to. Shoot me PMs if you have any specific questions. Chief can back me up on this...best Mexican Food in Las Cruces is at My Brother's Place.

I think I saw this story on Unsolved Mysteries years ago.

Yep. They aired an episode about it. I got to see my Aunt and Grandma in one of the scenes. They weren't talking, just in the scene in the background.

I lived out there for a dozen years working for the railroad. I enjoyed the area and found plenty to do, liked most of the people and pretty much loved the laid back " mañana" attitude . Cloudcroft and ruidoso were cool places. Plus there lots of places that sold green chile cheeseburgers .
Loved the Mexican food. Place called the riviera in el paso was great and a
Little place called Chopis around Mesilla was good too.

Clearly something happened at Roswell (where by the way the First Squadron to drop the bombs trained at the nearby air base). I doubt it was anything rocket connected so the Goddard part probably does not apply. It probably was some kind of advanced prototype aircraft of some kind. The late 40-s to late 50's was an incredible time as regards advances in rockets, missiles and aircraft; we moved so far so fast that looking back it was amazing. In less then 3 years we went from only the X-1 being able to go faster then sound to a production aircraft that could do it; we went from a lot of very smart people thinking that faster then sound was not possible for manned aircraft to accepting it as the norm in less then a year. All sorts of crazy ideas that really were far out there go some serious money and effort put into them.
In less then 10 years after Yeager flew the X-1 the Blackbird was designed.
And the X-15 right after it. There are more then a few that think a modified X-15 could have been the first spacecraft if more effort had been put into it.

I work for the Army in a mandatory mobility career; so when they tell you to go there you do or you have to quit. The choice I am facing is either there or Ft Irwin and a woman who just got here from there told me in no uncertain terms why I would NOT want to go there. Which pretty much confirmed what I had heard from elsewhere. I would prefer to go somewhere with a little more variety in weather; on the other hand I would be near mountains and I love mountains. The situation in Mexico is another concern- I would be only about 50 miles from the border.

Good luck Burmafrd. I also work for the Army in a mandatory mobility career. They sent me to NJ first. I love it here. Although I will only be here until 2010 or 2011 and then to Balt or somewhere else.

Best.....

Show.....

Ever.....

The show from years back was the best, I can't remember the host's name, but he died, and they have since started a new series on Spike TV(don't know how long it's been running), the new host is garbage compared to the original, guy. John Walsh from "Americas Most Wanted" would be a perfect fit for the new Unsolved Mysteries, imo.

Never miss an episode.

Not sure what you want to know, but Las Cruces is about 90,000 people in the northern Chihuahuan Desert next to some rugged desert mountains. It's a college town (NMSU), very laid back, nice people, good food. Agriculture is big, as is the military and space-related industries (NASA is here, too). It's one of the two fastest-growing cities in New Mexico (Rio Rancho is the other). It's about 40 miles north of El Paso (and the border), 225 south of Albuquerque.
