He runs about a 5.0 in a straight line. However, his crisp routes and use of leverage get him open like a tight end that runs a 4.6.

Rightfully, there is criticism of his long-range speed since he's lost any that he had, but he's still playing simply because he knows how to play the game.

I disagree to a point. Look at the Cleveland game for example or against Philly. He took off with some speed in a straight line. Not 4.5 speed or anything. I think it's more deceptive then anything. Running his routes he doesn't need full speed but watch him catch it in stride running. He has plenty left

No, he's mastered how to deal with subpar qb's. This is the year Dak figures out the seam route.

Not saying he doesn't, but Witten's game has never been based on speed. He is a technician who knows how to get open. Mostly that's in the short and intermediate range, but he can outfox a defense occasionally to get open for deeper passes against faster defenders (to a lesser extent than he used to). The reason Witten is stil in the league and effective is this. Usually the wheels fall off for the tight ends who rely primarily on speed.

Depends on who you are comparing him to. He's faster than most offensive linemen and slower than some of the top speed rushers. However, if those speed rushers tried to cover him downfield, he'd eat their lunch.

His acceleration is what hurts him. He was made moves to make defenders miss

He plays too many snaps during the season. He plays 100% of the offense snaps in most games.

Less snaps and he might keep that spring in his step that he now has after an offseason of rest.

He didn't start out as a Clydesdale.....but he wasn't Secretariat either. He was a great Cowboy and extended the career of a certain Cowboy QB. God bless Jason Witten.
