So if the Yankees do sign him with this type of contract, what will the actual numbers be when you add in the luxury tax?
Found this
A team that goes over the luxury tax cap for the first time in a five-year period pays a penalty of 17.5% of the amount they were over the cap, second-time violators pay a 30% penalty, and teams that exceed the limit three or more times pay a 40% penalty. The cap limit for 2010 is $170 million, and the cap for 2011 is $178 million.
I think the tax should start at $100M Starting at almost $200M is ridiculous. There is basically one team that *can* breaks that barrier to the point that the tax is substantial.
Basically, it seems if the Yankees have a $205M salary, they pay about $11M is luxury tax. Thats idiotic. Set the tax at $100M and they pay close to $50M for spending that ludicrous amount of money.
That would give other teams a fair shot and still allow teams like the Yankees to buy a player or two. Not 5-7 of the leagues top players.
If the Yankees give Lee 7 years $150M, I hope he needs Tommy John surgery during spring training.
